「節分」という言葉は現代の私たちにも伝えられている言葉ですね。これは旧暦で一年を二十四に分けた二十四節気の中で季節のはじまりの前日を表す言葉なんです。日本の季節は4つ。はっきりと分かれていますよね。これは外国の方にとってはすごく珍しいことなのです。
ということで、節分も4つあります。
立春、立夏、立秋、立冬
立春は二十四節気の第1番目になります。
2023年の節分は2月3日の金曜日。2月4日から春がスタート。まだ寒いのですが。

According to the old calendar, Setsubun is the last day of winter and the day before the spring. In Japan, we have four distinctive seasons. That might not be common outside Japan. We are familiar with talking about seasons. Especially the spring is important to us. But when the ancient Japanese used the old calendar, the beginning of spring started from February. In 2023, the last day before the spring is February 3rd. So this year, Setsubun is February 3rd, next Friday.

では、節分とは具体的に何をする日なのでしょう。
一般的に邪気を払い、無病息災を願う行事、といわれています。昔から「季節の変わり目は邪気が入りやすい」と考えられていました。また実際に「この時期（2月上旬）はまだ寒く体調を崩しやすい」ことから邪気を祓い清め、一年間の無病息災を祈る行事が行われてきました。これは現代にも言えることですね。昔は儀式が行われていましたが、今は「鬼は外、福は内」といいながら豆をまいて鬼を払い無病息災を願う行事として定着しています。

Let me explain what has been done in Setsubun.
Ancient Japanese used to have a ceremony to drive evils away and wish for good health. Today we have the same thought as ancient people believed that it was easier to get devils, or get sick when the seasons were changing. Like ancient people did, today we have custom in Setsubun. People throw roasted soy beans inside and outside their houses, shouting “Fortune in, devils out! “ After that, we eat the same number of beans as our age.

そして新しい習慣として恵方巻きが登場しました。恵方巻きは節分にその年の恵方を向いて食べると縁起がよいとわれる太巻きのお寿司のことです。この巻き寿司には、キュウリ、伊達巻き、うなぎなど7種類の具材が入っています。具が7種なのは、それぞれの具が七福神を意味するからです。

We have new custom from the 20th century, eating Ehomaki. Ehomaki is a thick and long rolled sushi. It is regarded as an auspicious custom that people eat Ehomaki on the day, Setsubun, facing toward the year’s lucky direction.
Ehomaki is made by rolling seven kinds of ingredients in vinegared rice and seaweed. The ingredients are cucumber, seasoned omelet, seasoned eel, and so on. Seven ingredients represent Japanese seven gods of good fortune.

恵方巻きの食べ方は、目を閉じて願い事を思い浮かべながら、恵方に向かって無言で一本まるごと丸かぶりします。巻き寿司を切らずに一本丸ごと食べるのは、縁を切らないという意味が込められています。一本丸ごと食べるのはかなりの量で、私は子どもには小さいサイズの恵方巻きを買っています。

I would like to show how to eat Ehomaki. People silently eat a whole Ehomaki all at one, keeping their eyes closed, facing toward the lucky direction of this year, and wishing for happiness and success. Eating a whole one without cutting means they should keep good relationships among people. That may get you full when you eat a whole Ehomaki so I usually buy smaller size of it.

恵方とは、その年の幸福の神様がいる方角のことで、その年最もよい方角といわれています。毎年方角は変わり、2023年は南南東です。スマホのアプリで方角を調べることができます。

Eho means a direction in which the year’s lucky god is. So this direction is the best of this year. The direction changes every year and Eho for 2023 is south-southeast. You can find it with your smartphone app.

これは南部大阪が発祥の地と言われていますが、起源はわかっていません。「恵方巻き」という名前は1989年セブンイレブンが、大阪でのこの習慣に目をつけ、売りだしたのが始まりです。今では2月上旬にスーパーやデパートで恵方巻きが売られています。

We do not know where this custom came from, But people in Osaka already have this custom before it spread to all over Japan. A leading convenience store began to sell it in Hiroshima　 and then went it throughout Japan. Today the ingredients and Ehomaki are sold at supermarkets and department stores in early February.
