海外の名作文学を読み解きながら英文法を学ぶシリーズの最新刊は、シャーロック・ホームズ。これまで、このシリーズは、ヘミングウエイが2巻、オスカー・ワイルド、オー・ヘンリーと全4冊、楽しく読んできた。シャーロック・ホームズは日本語でもちゃんと読んだのは2作くらいだが、今、NHKBSで再放送しているBBC制作のTVドラマシリーズは、現在まで30話近く、欠かさず観ている。今回の本で取り上げる「青いザクロ石の冒険」はTVドラマシリーズの中でも印象に残る話だったので、英語で読むのが楽しみだ。

◎ガチョウを卸した人物とホームズの駆け引きが続く。ホームズは真実を語らせるために、賭けをもちかける。

◎ホームズの捜査の仕方は、現代で言うところの、プロファイリングということなのだろう。今回の2ページの中でも、競馬新聞を持っているから、賭けにのってくるだろうと。その前の山高帽の持ち主に関するプロファイリングはすさまじく、ワトソンもあきれ気味だった。
物語は佳境に入ってきて、テンポも良くなってきたような気がする。後半も頑張ろう。
