96.Martin Luther King Jr.（マーティン・ルーサー・キング・ジュニア）20世紀、米国の公民権運動指導者。アトランタの牧師の子供として生まれたマーティン・ルーサー・キング・ジュニアは、ボストン大学で博士号を取得後、南部アラバマ州モンゴメリーで牧師となる。1955年12月路線バスで白人に席を譲らなかったとしてローザ・パークスが逮捕されたことをきっかけに、彼はバス・ボイコット運動を主導することになった。この抗議活動は1年にも及び、この間、彼は公民権運動の指導者として認識されるようになった。1954年アメリカの最高裁は公立学校での人種差別は違法とし、これをきっかけに連邦法は改正されるが、それを実施させるのはさらなる活動が必要だった。当時の米国で、黒人を白人よりも下に置く慣習や法律を「ジム・クロウ法」と呼んだが、彼は南部でその撤廃に向けた抗議活動を続けた。1963年8月の「I have a Dream.」の演説は有名である。連邦政府は、1964年に公民権法、1965年には選挙権法を改正する。

★Jim Crow；ジム・クロウ法；1870年代から1960年代までアメリカ南部における、州・郡・市町村レベルでの人種隔離をする規則と条例。「ジムクロウ」という言葉の語源は、顔を黒塗りした白人俳優のトーマス・ライスが演じたキャラクター。（the former practice in the U.S. of using laws that allowed black people to be treated unfairly and kept separate from white people, for example in schools）
◎キング牧師。改めて調べたが、彼が暗殺されたときの年齢は39歳だった。連邦政府は、1986年から毎年1月第3月曜日をキング牧師記念日（Martin Luther King, Jr. Day）として祝日に指定している。21世紀に入っても、米国で、世界で人種差別は無くなっていない。キング牧師が貫いた暴力によらない抗議活動の限界も感じざるを得ないようなことも世界では起きているが、それでもなお、非暴力・平和的な抗議活動を進めることが、暴力の連鎖を断ち切ることにつながると信じたい。
