三つの星の詩/An Elegy of Three Stars

第一章/Chapter 1

月の光が降り注ぐ夜、黒い服を着た女の人たちは泣きながら、男の人たちはうなだれて、幽霊みたいに家の中を動き回っていた。皆、カオリが知らない大人たち。だから、自分の家なのに急に知らない人の家に来たみたい。カオリはおとうさんの方に手を伸ばして聞いた。
「おかあさんはどこ。」
「おかあさんは、お空の星になったんだよ。」
おとうさんの声はポツンとしていて、両手はだらんと下がったまま。カオリは伸ばした手をひっこめて、一人で二階の自分の部屋に戻っていった。

In the summer night awash with moonlight, women in black dresses wept and men in black suits fell silent. They roamed from room to room like shadows with gloomy faces. The house was a strange place, crowded with adults whom Kaori had never met.
“Where is Mother?” she asked her father, reaching for his hand.
“Gone to become a star in the sky.” He uttered just this phrase in a hollow voice. His hand felt weak and empty. Alone, Kaori climbed the stairs back to her room.
