日本映画の紹介と感想 日本語と英語で書いてみた
しあわせのパン
「月とマーニ」という絵本がある。マーニは月を自転車に乗せて夜空を走る少年だ。ある時月が「まぶしいから太陽を無くして」という。マーニは答える。「太陽を無くしたら、きみはいなくなってしまう。だからそれはできない」そして「大切なのは君が照らされ、その君もほかの人を照らしているということなんだよ」という。きれいな色遣いとなだらかな曲線で描かれている童話は読む人を癒してくれる。実はこの絵本、本屋で探しても買うことはできない。なぜなら映画「しあわせのパン」にでてくるオリジナル作品だからだ。
三島由紀子監督による「しあわせのパン」はシンガーソングライター、矢野顕子の「ひとつだけ」という曲に啓発されて作られたそうだ。「欲しいものはたくさんあるの。・・・けれども今気が付いたこと・・本当に欲しいのはただ一つだけ」
映画の主人公は歳をとっても妖精のような原田知世と、モジャモジャ頭の大泉洋の二人だ。映画の舞台は北海道、洞爺湖畔に立つロッジ兼パン屋「マーニ」。原田が入れるコーヒーと大泉が作る焼き立てのパンが温かくお客を迎えてくれるという設定になっている。ここを訪れるお客はみな何かしら心に傷を抱えている。これが映画の横の糸。主人公二人の心の内側が縦の糸。しかしその心の内が何であるか、映画ははっきりと示してくれない。絵本と同じく映画も淡い色合いと少ない言葉で何かを観客に伝えようとするのみだ。
もう一つ大事な役割を果たしているのが二人の作る料理の数々。生きることに疲れた人々は心を込めて丁寧に作られたパンと料理を分かち合って食べ、いつの間にか明日への勇気をもらうのだ。生きていくのに大事なことは何か、無駄を省いていくとシンプルな答えが待っている。簡単にできそうでできないことを北海道のきれいな風景と優しい人々、滋味あふれる料理の力が可能にしてくれる。北欧テイストの家具と建物が映画の描く世界にさらに透明感を与えてくれる。原田の着ている洋服は風の中を舞う木の葉か虫の羽のようである。映画という虚構に築きあげた思いきり絵本の世界そのもののような作品である。
実際の世の中はそんなに絵空事ではない。もっと厳しく、つらく汚いことがたくさんあふれている。映画に何を求めるかは人によって様々だ。あまりに浮世離れしていると、深みのない駄作と受け取ることもできる。ただ、疲れて気力を無くしてしまったり、体調の悪い時には目と心にやさしい作品であることはまちがいない。そんな時には、絵本のような作品という評価は最大限の賛辞にもなりうる。
映画を見終えて心に残ったのが大泉洋という俳優だ。妻を見守り竈でパンを焼く静かな演技に終始していたのに、確かな存在感を発揮していた。食材も役者も料理次第で味が変わるのでこれから彼の出る新たな作品を見るのが楽しみである。
Love-Served with the Bread
“The Moon and Marny” is a picture book. A little boy named Marny cycles in the night sky with the moon in his bike-basket. One night the moon says to Marny, “Please take the sun out of my sight, it’s blinding” Marny says,” If the sun vanishes from your sight, you will be gone away from our sight together.” He continues, “Do you know, the sun shines on you and its reflection enables us to see you. Your presence in the night sky is precious for us”. The book’s beautiful colors and gentle contours heal the readers minds. The picture book is an original presented in the movie “Love-Served with the Bread”, so we can’t buy the book itself at a book-store.
In the first place, Mishima Yukiko, the movie director, wrote the Marny’s story, inspired by the song “Hitotsu dake” composed by Yano Akiko, a singer-song writer. The lyrics go, “There are many things I want to get…, but I’ve come to know…, what I really want is just one thing…” The movie’s main characters are frizzy-haired Ohizumi Yo and Harada Tomoyo, who still looks like a nymph defying the age. The movie is set by the lake Toya in Hokkaido. They run a bakery and small guest-house “Marny”. At the bakery people can enjoy Harada’s freshly brewed coffee and Ohizumi’s various types of bread hot from the oven. Almost all the customers come here with their own personal problems. Not only they, however, but also the main characters conceal some trouble. Although the sorrows in their hearts are not explicitly revealed in the film. Their inner wounds weave the story like warp and woof, in pale colors and with a limited number of words.
The delicious dishes, cooked wholeheartedly by Harada and Ohizumi, play an essential role in the story. Those who are having hard time feel energized and encouraged by sharing the dishes. People can realize what is the most valuable thing for their lives, after letting their obsessions go. Hokkaido’s beautiful scenery, warmhearted (local) people and tasteful foods help them make the hard work easier. You may be attracted by Harada’s garments like leaves or insect with transparent wings fluttering in the wind. The northern European style appearance and interior of the guest house enhance the transparent mood of the story.
The real world is not simple like a pipe dream. We must endure a countless number of harsh, severe and dirty ordeals. What you expect of the movie is different between individuals. If it lacks of a worldly sense too much, we may label it a shallow trash. However, if you are exhausted mentally or physically, this movie will heal you with warmth. Some critics say that this movie is like a picture book, which is quite a compliment in a sense. In addition, I’m strongly impressed by the actor Ohizumi Yo in the movie he acts in a calm manner, just watching his wife from afar and bakes bread. Nonetheless, he exerts a strong presence. I’m looking forward to watching his other films, because both food and actors taste different in different dishes.
