まずは聞き取って、考えてみてください。

英文は次のようになります。
The movement of ice over thousands of years often shapes glacial valleys, carving deep depressions into the landscape. These depressions are underlain by layers of bedrock that influence their depth and overall formation.

意味ですが、前半はまあ大丈夫だと思います。iceが動いて、glacial valleysができて、それがdepressionsを刻んでいくんですね。ここまでは良いと思うのですが、次のunderlainという語が曲者です。

元の形はunderlieです。これは実は「他動詞」なので、今回のように受動態になるわけです。でも、これ lie ですよね。lieといえば「ある」という意味の自動詞。ここら辺がややこしい原因です。

underlieの意味は、lie underです。
（下にあるものが）lie under（上にあるもの）、という英文になります。つまり、
（下にあるものが）underlie（上にあるもの）、となりますね。これが受動態で
（上にあるものが）is underlain by （下にあるもの）となるわけです。

関係がつかめたでしょうか。
