イディオム: rest on one's laurels

過去の業績や名声の上にあぐらをかく、という意味で頻繁に使われる表現です。

That used to be the top-notch high school in this region, but nowadays the school is just resting on its laurels.  かつてはかなりの進学校としてしられてたが、ここ最近は過去の名声の上にあぐらをかいているだけだ。

With the nimble advancement of drug discovery research in a number of new ventures, big pharma such as Pfizer or Merck cannot afford to rest on their laurels.  スタートアップがかなり頑張ってるのでファイザーやメルクなどのビッグファーマは過去の業績にあぐらをかいている余裕がない。

Although Kotaro is the scion of a famous academic family in Japan, he is by no means the one to rest on the family laurels. コタロウは代々大学教授を輩出する家系の出身だが、その家名の上にあぐらをかいているような男ではない。

If a scientist has achieved the success and fame in life that he has today, he deserves to rest on his laurels.  あの科学者ほどの成功と業績を収めていれば、その上にあぐらをかいていたとしも、ある意味同然だろう。

If you want to be successful as a scientist you should not rest on your laurels even after your manuscript is accepted by Science or Nature.  有名科学誌に論文がアクセプトされたからといってあぐらをかいているようでは成功できないよ。
