Study Tour Report@Jakarta International forum「Social Common Capital and the Future」

The first international forum “Social Common Capital and The Future” was held in Jakarta, Indonesia, on June 25th 2023. The forum was advised by Uzawa Kokusai Gakkan, Kyoto University, and also together with School of Strategic and Global Studies (SSGS) – Universitas Indonesia. The forum aimed to di disseminate “Social Common Capital” principles, advocated by economist Hirofumi Uzawa (1928-2014), into discussions among global societies. Indonesia was chosen as it is the largest economy in Southeast Asia and one of the emerging market economies with a rapidly growing population. The forum featured sessions focusing on urban and environmental design, food systems, healthcare, social entrepreneurship, and energy.

The theoretical concept of Social Common Capital, which developed by the late Professor Hirofumi Uzawa, underpins the creation of prosperous societies and provides solutions to the weaknesses of capitalism, such as expanding disparities and environmental degradation. It refers to a social framework that facilitates the enjoyment of prosperous economic life, the development of a positive culture, and the sustainable maintenance of an appealing society. Hirofumi argued that this framework should be a shared asset of society.

The objective of the international forum was to discuss: 1) How research on Social Common Capital have been implemented?; 2) Why do we need Social Common Capital now?; and 3) How do we extend the relationship between Social Common Capital and The Future while thinking ‘beyond capitalism’?

This report presents the summary of three-day activities: 1) A day visit to Akanoma Studio, Bandung, West Java; 2) A visit to Kampung Cikini, a high density informal settlement in Central Jakarta, Indonesia; 3) The main event, the international forum “Social Common Capital and The Future”.
