Rome wasn't built in a day. But how about ten days to build your Roam?
Over the next two weeks, you'll be receiving a series of short lessons in your inbox that will help you learn all the main features of Roam.
The Onboarding Office Hours series we just started is meant to accompany you on this journey: between the emails and the live interactions, you'll be Roaming like a pro in no time.
The only secret is: don't hold back, just start writing! Roam will do the rest.
The Daily Notes
The Daily Note is the first thing you'll see when you open your database: an empty page with today's date at the top.
So what to do? Start writing!
Think of it as the daily space where you write anything that you would previously write (rather think) anywhere:
Ideas that would previously go in a notebook or be scribbled on post-its
Emails that would previously go in Drafts
Summaries or essays that would go in a Word document
YouTube videos that you would save in your messaging app
Tasks that you would jot in a phone app
...
What about structure?
The bullet form of the notes, with the possibility of indenting and un-indenting, provides some structure, but organizing further according to some hierarchy or template is not necessary, to begin with.
Structure, connections, patterns will emerge bottom-up: and every day is a new iteration!
The magic of networked thought starts with...
Page references
Putting words or phrases (even emojis!) in between a pair of square brackets creates a bidirectional link to a newly created page.
When you enter the page by clicking on the link, you will see, at the bottom of the page, all the places where that page was referenced.
Say you create the page sleep in various contexts: when you journal in the morning, when you read an article about sleep hygiene, when you plan for your next road trip. All these references will appear in their original context at the bottom of the sleep page.
Here's a challenge for you try this week. Each lesson moving forward will include a new challenge of increasing complexity.
Challenge I
Start a daily journal practice of writing Morning pages (or any other tag) in your Daily Notes.
A few more tips
■ Create pages by typing the name of the page in the search bar
■ Press shift+click on a link to open a page in the right sidebar
■ Explore formatting the blocks (i.e., the piece of information per bullet) by right-clicking on the bullet
■ Explore time-stamping your written thoughts by choosing the Current Time command from the dropdown menu (trigger it with /)

Day I: Daily Notes and Page References
Daily Note
The only secret is: don't hold back, just start writing! Roam will do the rest.
