01.  はじめに

NGSL を Vocabulary.com と Trello を使ってマスターする方法を紹介している note です。Vocabulary.com は素晴らしいツールですが米国とカナダの小中高生を対象に作られた経緯もあって英語初心者の方にはハードルが高いのも事実です。note のご購入は下記問題の答えが分かる方に限定させていただければと思っています。

02.  NGSL（New Generation Service List）とは？

NGSL につきましてはツイートでも複数回にわたってオススメしている語彙リストです。

様々な言語データ（コーパス、250万語）を活用し、日常で使用される英単語を頻度順に並び替えて導き出したリスト（GSL）を1953年に発表。

GSLは長年様々な言語リサーチに使用されていたのですが、いくつかの課題も指摘されました。

(1) being based on a corpus that is considered to be quite dated
(2) being too small by modern standards (the initial work on the GSL was based on a 2.5 million word corpus)
(3) for not clearly defining what constitutes a “word”

さすがにリスト自体が古くなり、より正確なリストが求められるようになりました。そして2013年の3月、日本の有名大学の教授陣が Cambridge University Pressの言語データ（コーパス、2億7千3百万語）を活用し、ようやく生み出された最新のリストが New General Service List（= NGSL）です。

03.  すると、NAWLは？

NAWL は New Academic Word List の略です。２億８千８００万個のアカデミック英語からよく使われる単語を抽出したのが、NAWL です。そうして、抽出した NAWL の数は、960個。

今回の note でシェアする NAWL のリストには、Vocabulary.com で学習できる単語を約780個シェアしています。

上記でシェアした NGSL のリストと合わせますと、全部で約2480個の単語を Vocabulary.com で学ぶことが出来ます。

04.  Trelloって、何？

To Do リストを管理するツールは多いですがその中でも有名なサービスが Trello です。語彙リストの中でマスターしたカードを移すことで達成感も大きいはずです。

05.  何故 Vocabulary.com？

学習にゲーム的な要素を取り入れることを、Gamification と言います。語彙学習に Gamification を導入することで、学習効率の向上に繋がった研究結果も。

06.  NGSL を Vocabulary.com で学習する方法

アメリカとカナダの小中高、41,000校以上が語彙学習用に採用しているのが Vocabulary.com です🇺🇸🇨🇦。語彙力アップだけでなく、クイズを解いていくとネイティブの語感まで鍛えられる。NGSL を Vocabulary.com で学習する様子を納めた動画です。

07.  何故 Trello？

今回用意した NGSL の語彙リストは、30個の単語が57セットあります。これくらいの数になりますとどのリストがマスター出来たのかをマニュアルで管理するのは難しいです。Trello を活用することで、学習の進捗状況が直感的に分かるようになります。

08.  Vocabulary.com の問題形式と出題モード

Vocabulary.com には10個の質問形式と4つの出題モードがあります。

Question Types and Modes

■質問形式

同意語（Synonym）や反対語（Antonym）、そして文脈での意味など、一つの単語を複数の方面から見ることで単語の意味だけでなく用法も自然と身につくようになります。

■出題モード

Vocabulary.com では Adaptive Learning を採用し、学習者の理解度や進度に合わせて、個別に最適化した学習内容を提供しています。

最初に出題するクイズは学習者が知っている単語を判定（Assessment）する為の問題です。これらの問題を解くことで、Vocabulary.com は学習者の語彙力を知ることとなります。

クイズで間違えた問題は "Review モード" で復習をする。"Assessement モード" はまた学習者が学ぶ必要がある単語をリストアップし、"Progress モード" でそれらの単語の進捗を確認します。

"Progress モード" でマスターした単語は、"Brush-up モード" で再度出題することで忘れない仕組みとなっています。

09.  Vocabulary.com の学習方法

①アカウント作成
②語彙リストを選択
③リスト習得率85％を目指す

■アカウントの作成

アカウント作成の際に学年（Grade）を選択する箇所がありますのでまずは 1st grade からスタートするようにしてください。

語彙リストは画面の下にあるリストから選ぶことも出来れば、Trello の Board からもアクセスできます。Board へのリンクは「Trello の使い方」セクションを参照してください。

■リスト習得率85％を目指す

NGSL の語彙リストを選択しますと、Vocabulary.com の画面に遷移します。

画面をスクロールして、リストに含まれている単語とその意味をまず確認してください。

確認が終わりましたら、Practice でクイズの開始です。クイズは ②Round 単位で出題されます（下記図参照）。各 Round には10個の問題が。Round が終わりますと結果に合わせ左下にある①進捗が更新されます。100％を目指すのは難しいので、目安として85％を越えれば、マスターしたとしても良いと思います。

10.  Trello の使い方

Trello でよく使う単語が、①Board、②List、そして ③Card です。Board の中には複数の List があって、その中にはまた複数の Card があります。下記の例では、ボードの中に4つのリストがあって、Mastered のリストには4つのカードがあります。

Trello が初めての方は、まずアカウントを作成してください。アカウントを作成して上記のリンクをアクセスしますと次のような画面が表示されます。

画面の右上に「Show Menu」と出ていますので、そのメニューを選択してください。すると、画面の右側に「Menu」が表示されます。

Menu から「More」を選択してください。More の詳細が見えますので、「①Copy Board」を選びます。Copy Board のセクションが出ましたら、②タイトルを入力し、「③Create」ボタンを押下してください。

Trello のボードが無事コピー出来ましたら、Trello のワークフローに従ってカードを適切なリストへ移してください。

11.  Trello のワークフロー

NGSLの語彙学習をする上で、2つのワークフローが考えられます。

①To Learn から Learning へ
②Learning から Mastered へ

■To Learn から Learning

NGSL: 01-03 の学習を始めたとしますと、まず、NGSL: 01-03 カードを、To Learn から Learning へ移動してください。

【注意】ご自分の Board でないと、カードを移すことは出来ません。上記の手順で Board のコピーが終わっているかを確認した上で学習を始めてください。

それぞれのカードには3つの語彙リストがあります。NGSL: 01-03 の場合、カードをクリックしますと、詳細画面から語彙リストが確認出来ます。学習が終わりましたら、それぞれのチェックマークに☑️を入れて、進捗を更新出来ます。

■Learning から Mastered

各カードにある全ての語彙リストが終わりましたら、Learning から Mastered へ移動します。そして、同時に To Learn にあるカード（下記の例では、NGSL: 04-06）を一つ、Learning のリストへ移してください。

Vocabulary.com はとても良いサービスですが、ネイティブの子供用に作られたこともあって難しく感じる方も多いと思います。Vocabulary.comの正答率が70%以下であれば、まずはNGSL をQuizlet で覚えてください。
