The frenetic energy enveloping Shibuya Station can serve as a balm for daily tribulations, yet at times, this exuberance overflows its bounds. In a bid to cement Shibuya's reputation as a refined international metropolis and to safeguard the well-being of its denizens and visitors, Shibuya Ward has decreed a prohibition on public drinking from 6 PM to 5 AM, commencing October 2024.
 
Indeed, the annual tumult reported during Halloween and Christmas is often fueled by disorderly street revelry. In truth, there exists no place where such conduct is condoned.
 
That evening, as I meandered through the streets of Shibuya, my gaze alighted upon an abandoned highball can. I could have disregarded it, yet I felt a pang of complicity in the moral decay it symbolized. I resolved to retrieve this "outcast of a city that had forsaken its essence" and convey it to the nearest refuse bin. Not for the sake of others, nor to don the mantle of a hero, but simply to heed the quiet dictates of my conscience.
 
However, an unforeseen revelation awaited me. To my chagrin, the can was more than half full. Ensnared by a cunningly laid trap, I sighed deeply within and discreetly poured the contents into the gutter before consigning this detestable source of discomfort to the path of reform.
 
Shibuya Ward has proclaimed a "Zero Tolerance for Nuisance Street Drinking," intensifying efforts to eradicate behaviors such as obstructing traffic, littering, and noise engendered by public drinking. Public spaces, shared by many, must be treated with care and reverence. This is my conviction.
