8月6日、オスロでは深夜1時、時差7時間の広島市で行われている平和記念式典のライブストリームを見ていた。8時15分の黙祷の時、静かなキッチンで一人目を瞑ると、昨年参加した式典の日差しと空気の熱が蘇るようだった。

8月4日からオスロのYoungstorgetという広場でHiroshimadagen（広島の日）というイベントが始まった。毎年開催されているそうで、今年は開幕にオスロ市長とICANノルウェーがスピーチをした。広場では複数のアーティストによる反核メッセージのポスターが展示されている。8月6日、日曜日のオスロ大聖堂では広島・長崎へ祈りが捧げられた。

Youngstorgetには高さ7メートルの平和のモニュメントと、「広島の爆心地から来た石」がある。最近訪れたノルウェー北部のナルヴィクでも「爆心地から来た石」を見た。ナルヴィクは第二次世界大戦中に激戦地となった。爆心地の石は平和首長会議の加盟自治体に贈られたそうだ。ノルウェーでは、オスロやナルヴィクを含む105の自治体が平和首長会議に参加している。

はるばるナルヴィクとオスロで出会った「爆心地から来た石」は、見覚えのあるピンクがかった花崗岩だった。原爆投下以前の広島市で柱や橋や墓を作る際に使われた石材の多くは、私の故郷の倉橋島や山口県の徳山、四国（伊予石）が産地となっていたという。倉橋島産の石は「桜御影」や「議院石」とも呼ばれ、国会議事堂の外装にも使われている。「爆心地から来た石」となって世界に点在する今、こうした石の産地が語られることはほぼないのだろうけれど、倉橋島の花崗岩産地としての歴史と、原爆投下前の華やかな広島市の建築を支えていたことを思う。故郷から遠く離れた石に触れながら、平和への祈りを。

August 6th 2023, in Oslo (English version)

On August 6th, at 1:00 a.m. in Oslo, I started to watch a live stream of the Peace Memorial Ceremony of Hiroshima, Japan. The time difference is 7 hours. At 8:15 am in Hiroshima, a bell rang to mark the time of the atomic bomb drop of 78 years ago. I offered a silent prayer alone in my kitchen. Later, I heard that about 50,000 people attended the ceremony this year.

From August 4th, an event called Hiroshimadagen (Hiroshima Day) is held in Youngstorget, Oslo. Marianne Borgen, the mayor of Oslo, and a representative from ICAN Norge gave speeches. Several artists are presenting posters with anti-nuclear messages at Youngstorget. In the morning of August 6th, a service was held in Oslo Domkirke.

There is a 7-meter-high peace monument in Youngstorget. In front of the monument, there sits a stone brought from the hypocenter of Hiroshima, “STEIN FRA 0-PUNKTET I HIROSHIMA.” I have seen a similar stone in Narvik. Such stones were sent to member cities of “Mayors for Peace”, an organization established by the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and now a registered NGO in Special Consultative Status with the UN Economic and Social Council. In Norway, 105 cities, including Oslo and Narvik, are members of the Mayors for Peace today.

The stones from the hypocenter of Hiroshima are pinkish granite, and they look very familiar to me. In Hiroshima city before the atomic bomb attack, stones used to build pillars, bridges, and tombs were brought from Kurahashi Island, where my hometown is, as well as other towns around the Seto Inland Sea area. My hometown Kurahashi has been known as a major production area for pinkish granite.

The stones now sit in Oslo, Narvik, and possibly other cities of the Mayors for Peace may be originally from my island. They are known as “stones from the hypocenter of Hiroshima” and not many people would think of the origin of the stones. However, the stones make me think of the history of granite production on my home island and how that supported the construction of flourishing cities like Hiroshima before the atomic bomb.
