繰り返しの中に、満足を見つける | Finding contentment in repetition.

　繰り返される快適なサイクルの中にある微妙な違いに気づくことで、満足感を得ることができるのだ。風はまったく同じようには吹かないように。

　Contentment is found by noticing subtle differences in comforting repetitive cycles. The wind never blows exactly the same way.

　山手線の新しい駅、高輪ゲートウェイ駅には、誰でも弾けるステーションピアノがある。今年の未完成を完成させるべく、下車することにした。

　A new station on the Yamanote Line, the Takanawa Gateway station, has a station piano that anyone can play. I decided to get off to complete this year's unfinished work.

　お掃除ロボットや近未来的なタッチレスコンビニがある高輪ゲートウェイ駅は、人影もまばらだ。木目調のホームからエスカレーターで上がると、天井の高い開放的な構内が広がっている。吹き抜けには大きなガラス張りの壁があり、そこから周囲を見渡すことができる。まるでどこかの空港のような雰囲気である。

　The Takanawa Gateway station, with its cleaning robots and futuristic touchless convenience store, is sparsely populated. From the wooden-grained platform, an escalator leads up to the high-ceilinged, liberating premises. The atrium has a large glass wall from which visitors can look out over the surrounding area. It is like the atmosphere of an airport somewhere.  

　その構内の真ん中付近に、アップライトピアノが置いてあった、誰もピアノを弾いていない！ピアノには、人の手の形をしたシールが、放射線に貼られており、どこか温かみを感じる。iPhoneをピアノの端にセットした。背景は、ガラス窓から見える都会のビルだ。私はジムノペディを弾き始めた。

　Near the middle of the station was an upright piano, no one was playing it! The piano has human hand stickers in a radiating pattern, which gives it a somewhat warm welcoming feeling. I set my iPhone on the edge of the piano. The background was a scene of urban buildings seen through a glass window. I started playing “Gymnopédies”.

　人影がまばらの吹き抜けの空間に、構内アナウンスの騒音が鳴り響く。ピアノの音は周りの音にかき消され、あまり聞こえない。ここのピアノは新しいようで、若干硬い。だから指が滑ることなく、落ち着いて鍵盤を押すことができた。少し緊張していたが、周りの騒音に助けられ、次第に家で弾いているくらい、リラックスしていた。

　The sparsely populated atrium is filled with the noise of station announcements. The piano here seems to be newer and the keys slightly stiffer. So my fingers didn't slip and I could press the keys calmly. I was a little nervous, but the noise around me helped and gradually I became so relaxed that it was like playing at home.

　後ろに並んでいる若い男性が見えたので、発表会を終えた。これからも目の前にピアノが現れたら、いつでも弾こう。　　

　I saw a young man in line behind me and I finished my recital. I will continue to play the piano whenever it appears in front of me.

　ホームに戻って、ピアノの音に耳を傾けてみると、なんと「ジムノベディ」が聞こえてきた。

　Back on the platform, I listened to the piano, and to my surprise, I heard “Gymnopédies”.

　さて、iPhoneで撮った音はどうだろうか？　白いビルと曇り空のアンニュイな風景に、ジムノベディの淡々とした和音が、マッチして美しい。ガラス張りの奥に見える白いビルと白い雲も一緒にジムのベティを奏でているかのようだ。

　Now, how was the sound recorded by video on my iPhone? When I checked the recording, It was beautiful that the plain chords of the Gymnopédies matched the ennui of the white buildings and cloudy sky. It is as if the white buildings and white clouds behind the glass walls were playing Gymnopédies together.

　ピアノの音もしっかりと拾えており、構内アナウンスとのコラボレーションが、映画の一場面のようだ。それにたまたま、私はレトロなセーターを着ており、映像の中に溶け込んでいるように見えた。ピアノの音が、背景に助けられたかのように。　

　The piano sound was well picked out, and the collaboration with the station announcements made it sound like a scene from a film. And I happened to be wearing a retro jumper, which seemed to blend in with the picture. As if the sound of the piano was helped by the background.

　ジムノペディのメロディーは、静かに和音が淡々と変化していくところが好きだ。そんな淡々とした曲だからこそ、繰り返し演奏することで、自分の変化も敏感に感じられる。　

　I like the Gymnopédies melody, with its quietly changing chords in an unfussy way. Because it is such an unobtrusive piece of music, I can also sense in a sensitive way my changes by playing it repeatedly.

　それは、日常生活と同じではないだろうか？　同じ中に変化を感じられる感性こそが、小さな幸せを見つけたり、人の良きところを見つけたりする感性につながる。それが人生の幸せにつながると思う 。そして、継続することでしか、到達することのできない世界を見てみたい。

　It’s like everyday life. It is this sensitivity to change within the same situation that leads to the sensitivity to find small happiness and to find the nice things in other people. I think that leads to happiness in life. And I want to see a world that can only be reached through continuity.
