Spotify is now worth more than the music industry when Spotify was founded.

It started with the founder listening to music on pirate websites. The alternative to buying a CD was going to those websites and listen to music illegally. And the music industry was okay with only providing music to the people who were fortunate enough to purchase CDs. The industry blamed the pirate services for the decline in record sales rather than seeing that there was an unsatisfied demand.

The founder of Spotify saw the friction between the limited supply and customer demand for lower prices, essentially creating an alternative of the past where if you could not pay 15dallars, you were not a customer at all.

The discovery of this new demand perpetuated the growth of the music industry both for the good of the record companies and for the musician as well as the consumers. The evaluation of universal jumped from 3billion to 15 billion after the launch of Spotify.

The discussion of the concentration of certain artists accumulating wealth is not essential. It just seems like those artists are objectively taking more from others by marketing and concentration but the difference is just relative, as the pie grows bigger so does the difference in earnings. The indies have actually been more successful since they can create content cheaply at their house and upload it. Simply as more people are listening to music nowadays, the chances for people to listen to their music have skyrocketed.
