私のイチオシ「ポッドキャスト革命児による新番組」～英語のあらすじ紹介付き～

さて、今回もおすすめポッドキャストの一押しエピソードのご紹介です。テーマは「ポッドキャスト革命児による新番組」。

１．番組タイトル＆注目ポイント

番組名は「How To Save a Planet」

この番組、タイトルの通り環境問題を題材にした番組なんですが、注目ポイントはポッドキャストの革命児、Alex Blumberg（アレックス・ブランバーグ）がパーソナリティーの新番組なんです。

以前の記事でも紹介したこの人、Gimlet Mediaというポッドキャスト制作会社を2014年に立ち上げて、2019年にはSpotifyに買収された注目の人物。元々Planet MoneyやThis American Lifeなどのポッドキャスト番組でも長年パーソナリティーを務めた経歴を持っていて、ラジオジャーナリストとしても、ストーリーテラーとしても素晴らしく、ストーリーテリングタイプのポッドキャスト作成に強みを持った人物です。

２．あらすじ

さて、そんな人物が作る「環境問題」を題材にした番組とは？
普通、環境問題と言えば「リサイクルをしましょう」とか「買い物袋を持参しましょう」などという在り来たりなアドバイスで終わるようなコンテンツも多い中、やはりこのアレックスの番組は切り口が違います。

第１話で題材になったのは、マサチューセッツ州の街サマーセット。

ここでは昔から石炭発電所が大きな産業でした。小さい街ながらも、住民たちには仕事があり、公共施設も充実して不自由ない生活が送れていたのは石炭による税収入があったから。環境に良くないと分かってはいても街の大きな収入源を失う事は出来ない。

そんな中、時代の流れと共に石炭以外の収入源を本格的に探さなければならない時が来ます。そこで白羽の矢が立ったのが、洋上風力発電。

環境問題に取り組まなければならないと誰もが分かっていても、そこには政府規模で取り組まねばならない数々の規制が立ちはだかり、ビジネスモデルとしての収益性の検証や、住民たちの意識改革まで、あらゆる面での問題がハードルとなります。

今回の第１話では、環境問題に取り組むための多角的な視点が養える、そんなエピソードになっています。

The podcast I’d like to share with you today is done by my favorite podcaster, Alex Blumberg. He is the CEO of Gimlet Media, a journalist and an amazing story teller. His company has been getting a lot of attention in the industry since its acquisition by Spotify in 2019.
His newly released show called “How to Save a Planet” is about tackling big questions: what do we need to do to solve the climate crisis, and how do we get it done?
You may think this is one of those typical shows giving you obvious tips like: we should recycle more, or say NO to plastic bags. It is not. 
This first episode dove into a case study of a town in Massachusetts, which used to rely on a coal power plant for tax revenue. Even though people knew coal was not environmentally friendly and not good for their health, it wasn’t easy to change because the plant was the main revenue source of the town. In the end, the town decided to go with new power source, offshore wind.
This episode illustrates why it’s so hard to solve environmental problems because of the way they interact with government policies, business models and people’s mindsets.
Despite the heavy subject matter, there are lots of laughs and it is not Covid-19 related, for those of you who are already fed up with recent news. It’s also a great example of good storytelling podcast. Hope you find it interesting.

３．最後に

ポッドキャストの革命児がリリースした新番組とあって、個人的にはアレックスの声を久しぶりに聞けて嬉しかった、というのが大きくもあるんですが、ストーリーテリングタイプのよい一例とも言えるような番組構成で、ポッドキャストの組み立て方の方程式はどのジャンルにも応用できると納得した一本でもありました。

ストーリーテリングタイプだと、結構ジャーナリズム系の内容が多く、余りなじみのない事象を取り上げていると、日本人にはしっくりこないエピソードもあるんですが、環境問題は全人類の話。

オンラインミーティング疲れで、緑を見ながら散歩でもしたいな、という時に一緒に聴いてみてください。
