WWDJAPAN アフターインタビュー【ボルトスレッズ ダン・ウィドマイヤーさん】 #菌類に覆われた世界
ファッション業界専門誌「WWDJAPAN」とコラボレーション。24年1月8日発売号「FUTURE FASHION. 起こるかもしれない未来のファッション」にて「雨の止まない世界」「空中で暮らす世界」「月を行き来する世界」「菌類に覆われた世界」「仮想空間で生きる世界」FFEの5つのテーマでファッション業界 x 異業種でディスカッション。想像力を駆使して、5つの未来のファッションを予想・想像・妄想しています。
ここでは「菌類に覆われた世界」の対談に参加してくださった、キノコ類の菌糸体（マイセリウム）を培養して作る“マイロ”（Mylo）の生みの親、ダン・ウィドマイヤーさんに感想をお伺いしていきます。

ワシントン大学卒業後、カリフォルニア大学で生物の再プログラミング機能について研究し、化学と化学生物学の博士号を取得。2009年にボルトスレッズを共同設立。2012年には人口タンパク質が原料のシルク繊維”マイクロシルク”を開発した。

①対談ありがとうございました。お話しされてみていかがでしたか。
The discussion was fascinating, because from both a scientific and artistic perspective it’s clear that the breadth and depth of the kingdom of fungi is more expansive than almost anyone thinks about. This is diversity in both morphology, how it looks, and functionality, how it works at a molecular level. The discussion evoked a powerful reminder of the number of ways that art and design can open up the hidden opportunities in the world of fungi to enable structure, function, form and color.
科学的観点と芸術的観点の両方から見ても、菌類の世界の幅と深さは多くの人が想像するよりも広大であることが明らかになり、この対談はとても魅力的でした。これは、形態（見た目）と機能性（分子レベルでどのように機能するか）の両方における多様性です。今回の対談を通じて、菌類の世界に隠された構造・機能・形・色の可能性を芸術やデザインが開放できる数多くの方法を強く思い起こしました。
②対談のお相手である現代美術作家の齋藤さんから受けた刺激などはありますか。
The use fungi from multiple clades of the tree of life, slime mold are technically protists and not true fungi. However the interactions between the two were used by my partner to create beautiful examples of nature creates structures and colors. As business people we always tend towards simplicity and single, controllable elements. The idea of having multiple species in biology working together to form a commercial product, similar to how symbiotic relationships evolve in nature, was eye opening for me.
生命の樹の複数の系統に由来する菌類と、厳密に言えば原生生物であり、真の菌類ではありません。しかし齊藤さんは、この 2 つの相互作用を利用して、構造と色を生み出す自然の美しい例を作成しました。ビジネスマンとして、私たちは常にシンプルさと単一の制御可能な要素を重視する傾向があります。自然界で共生関係が進化するのと同じように、生物学において複数の種が協力して商品を形成するというアイデアは、私にとって目を見張るものでした。
③「菌類に覆われた世界」がきたときに期待する世界はどんな世界ですか。
This is simple. It would be a world where all of our matter or “stuff” is recycled between the various objects, food, and items we use throughout our lives. A cycle of efficiency in our utilization of the world around us while simultaneously enabling a vastly improved quality of life for billions of humans, while also having a society that lives in harmony with nature rather than only extracting from it and destroying it.
答えはシンプルです。それは、私たちのすべての物質、つまり「もの」が、私たちが生涯を通じて使用するさまざまな物、食べ物、アイテムの間でリサイクルされる世界となるでしょう。私たちの周囲の世界を効率的に利用するサイクルは、同時に何十億もの人間の生活の質の大幅な向上を可能にし、同時に単に自然から抽出したり破壊したりするのではなく、自然と調和して生きる社会を実現します。
④ダンさんが「FUTURE FASHION AWARD」に応募するならどんなファッションを企画しますか。
This is a tough question! The scientist in me wants be pragmatic, realistic, and simple. The innovator in me wants to go BOLD. I would position this a blend between living materials and fashion. Creating pieces that are a combination of different fungal phylum that form static structures, covered with living “skins” of fungi that react with their environment. These would eat and process pollutants, change colors over time, and create dynamic textures that change with what the product is exposed to in the owner’s life.
これは難しい質問です！私の中の科学者は、実用的で現実的かつシンプルであることを望んでいます。私の中にあるイノベーターは、大胆に行動したいと考えています。私はこれを、生きた素材とファッションの掛け合わせと位置づけたいと思います。環境に反応する菌類の生きた「皮」で覆われた、静的な構造を形成するさまざまな菌類の種類を組み合わせた作品を作成します。これらは汚染物質を食べて処理し、時間の経過とともに色が変化し、そして持ち主の生活の中でさらされる環境に応じて変化するダイナミックな質感を作り出します。
⑤菌類や粘菌との共生をもっと意識し、実社会に組み込むメリットや新たな可能性について教えてください。
Fungi are nature’s recyclers. In the western world in particular (eg: The United States of America) fungus and molds are thought of as bad, and need to be eradicated because they are harmful pests. The best thing your readers could do across all cultures is that the kingdom of fungi play a vital role in completing the circle of life. They process and break down chemicals and materials in the biosphere that plants, animals, and most bacteria cannot. We should be grateful for the function molds and fungus play in making our planet livable in a closed loop system.
菌類は自然界のリサイクル業者です。特に西洋世界 (例: アメリカ合衆国) では、真菌やカビは悪いものとみなされ、有害な害虫であるため根絶する必要があるとされています。あらゆる文化にわたってみなさんができる最善のことは、菌類の世界が生命の循環を完成させるうえで重要な役割を果たしているということを認識することです。菌類は、植物、動物、およびほとんどの細菌が処理できない生物圏内の化学物質や物質を処理、分解してくれています。私たちは、閉ざされた循環システムの中で地球を住みやすくしてくれている、カビや菌類の働きに感謝すべきです。
ダンさん、ありがとうございました！科学者としての視点と商業としての視点を持ちながら、アーティストの齋藤さんからの奇想天外な投げかけにも、スマートに思考して、可能性を感じてくださる姿勢が印象的でした。人は言葉によって、固定概念に引っ張られてしまうことにどう抗い、自分が社会実装させたい世界を作り上げられるのかという強い思いも創業者ならではのパッションでした。
