1972年東京都生まれ。小学校時代をイギリス、高校時代をアメリカで過ごす。大学卒業後NHKに入局し、ニュースやスポーツ番組のキャスター、ナレーター、インタビュアーなどとして幅広く活躍。「紅白歌合戦」や「プロジェクトX」などの司会も担当。2004年からフリーアナウンサーとしてテレビやラジオに出演する傍ら、執筆活動や絵本の翻訳も手がける。08年から日本ユネスコ協会連盟の世界寺子屋運動広報特使「まなびゲーター」を務め、14年にはモンテッソーリの国際教諭資格を取得するなど、「子ども」と「言葉」、そして「教育」をキーワードに活動の場を広げている。ニューヨーク在住6年目の2022年、念願だったモンテッソーリ幼稚園で働き始める。

世界寺子屋運動は、基本的人権として誰もが教育の機会を得て、貧困のサイクルを断ち切り自ら考えて行動を起こしていけるように、1989年から活動を続けています。
寺子屋は年齢、宗教、性別にかかわらず、すべての人が公平に学べる場として、海外ではCommunity Learning Center (CLC) と呼ばれています。
