It was Halloween night, and all the houses on Maple Street were decorated with spooky lights and pumpkins.

On one doorstep, there was a small Jack-O'-Lantern with a sad face carved into it.

"I wish someone would talk to me," the Jack-O'-Lantern whispered to itself.

Just then, a little girl in a witch costume walked up with her candy bag.

"Hi there!" she said cheerfully. "You look so sad, Mr. Pumpkin!"
「こんにちは！」と彼女は元気に言いました。「カボチャさん、なんだか悲しそうだね！」

"I'm always alone on Halloween," the Jack-O'-Lantern replied. "Everyone just passes by without saying anything."
「ハロウィンのたびにいつも一人ぼっちなんだ」とジャック・オ・ランタンは答えました。「みんな何も言わずに通り過ぎるんだよ。」

The girl tilted her head. "Well, you’re talking now! I’m Lily, by the way. What’s your name?"

The Jack-O'-Lantern blinked its candlelight eyes in surprise.

"I don’t have a name. No one’s ever given me one," it said sadly.
「名前なんてないよ。誰もつけてくれたことがないんだ」と、悲しそうに言いました。

Lily smiled. "How about Jack? Jack-O'-Lantern! It suits you!"
リリーは微笑みました。「じゃあ、ジャックってどう？ジャック・オ・ランタンにぴったりだよ！」

"Jack..." the pumpkin repeated slowly. "I like it."
「ジャックか…」とかぼちゃはゆっくり繰り返しました。「気に入ったよ。」

Lily giggled. "See, now you have a name and a friend!"
リリーはくすくす笑いました。「ほら、これで名前も友達もできたね！」

"Thank you, Lily," Jack said, glowing a little brighter. "You’re the first friend I’ve ever had."
「ありがとう、リリー」とジャックは少し明るく光りながら言いました。「君が僕の初めての友達だよ。」

Lily waved goodbye as she skipped away to the next house. "Don’t be lonely anymore, Jack!"
リリーは次の家に向かってスキップしながら手を振りました。「もう寂しくないよ、ジャック！」

As the night went on, Jack felt warm inside, not from the candle, but from the kindness in his new friend’s words.
夜が更けていくにつれ、ジャックはろうそくの炎ではなく、新しい友達の優しい言葉で心が温かくなっていきました。

From that night on, Jack never felt lonely again, even when the trick-or-treaters went home.
