ハロウィンの競争
Title: "The Halloween Race"
It was Halloween night, and the moon hung low, casting a pale glow over the forest.
ハロウィンの夜、森に低くかかる月が淡い光を放っていた。
“Tonight’s the night, Turtle!” said Rabbit, hopping up and down excitedly. “We race again!”
「今夜だよ、カメ！」とウサギは興奮しながら跳ねた。「また競争しよう！」
Turtle, slow and steady as always, looked up and sighed. “Do we really have to? Nobody cared last time.”
いつも通りゆっくりと落ち着いているカメは、見上げてため息をついた。「本当にやるのかい？前回も誰も気にしてなかったじゃないか。」
Rabbit grinned, his ears twitching. “Of course we do! It’s tradition. This time, everyone will watch.”
ウサギは耳をピクピクさせながらニヤリと笑った。「もちろんだよ！これが伝統だもん。今度こそみんなが見てくれるさ。」
But as they stood at the starting line, not a single creature appeared. The bats were busy flitting around pumpkins, and the owls hooted from afar, uninterested.
二匹がスタートラインに立ったが、生き物は誰一人として現れなかった。コウモリはカボチャの周りを飛び回り、フクロウは遠くから興味なさげにホーホーと鳴いていた。
Turtle glanced at Rabbit. “See? No one’s watching.”
カメはウサギを見て言った。「ほらね？誰も見てないよ。」
Rabbit crossed his arms and puffed out his chest. “So what? We’ll race for ourselves!”
ウサギは腕を組んで胸を張った。「だから何だって？自分たちのために競争すればいいさ！」
Turtle shrugged. “Alright, but don’t complain when I win.”
カメは肩をすくめた。「分かったよ。でも僕が勝っても文句は言わないでね。」
With a smirk, Rabbit replied, “Dream on, slowpoke!”
ウサギはニヤリとして言った。「夢でも見てろ、のろま！」
And so, they began. Rabbit dashed forward at lightning speed, leaving Turtle behind almost instantly. He zoomed past trees and hopped over rocks, laughing to himself.
そして、競争が始まった。ウサギは雷のようなスピードで走り出し、瞬く間にカメを置き去りにした。木々をすり抜け、岩を飛び越えながら、ウサギはひとりで笑っていた。
“This is too easy!” Rabbit chuckled, glancing back to see Turtle inching forward slowly.
「簡単すぎる！」とウサギは笑い、ゆっくりと進むカメを後ろに見ながら言った。
Turtle, however, didn’t mind. He knew his pace. “Slow and steady,” he muttered under his breath.
しかしカメは気にしていなかった。彼には自分のペースがあった。「ゆっくり、でも確実に」とカメは小声でつぶやいた。
Halfway through the race, Rabbit stopped under a tree, feeling confident. “I could take a nap, and he still wouldn’t catch up!”
レースの途中で、ウサギは木の下で立ち止まり、自信たっぷりに言った。「昼寝しても追いつけないだろうな！」
Just as Rabbit settled down, a group of ghostly squirrels floated by, giggling. “What’s the point of racing when no one cares?” they teased.
ウサギが横になった瞬間、幽霊のリスの集団が浮かんできてクスクス笑った。「誰も気にしてないのに、競争する意味あるの？」と彼らはからかった。
Rabbit frowned. “Someone will care! You’ll see.”
ウサギは眉をひそめた。「誰かは気にしてくれるさ！見てろよ。」
But the squirrels just floated away, uninterested.
しかし、リスたちは興味を示さずにふわふわと去っていった。
Meanwhile, Turtle kept going, never once slowing down. “I don’t need an audience,” he whispered. “I just need to finish.”
その間、カメは一度もスピードを緩めずに進み続けていた。「観客はいらないんだ」とカメはつぶやいた。「ゴールすればそれでいい。」
Rabbit, determined not to be outdone, hopped back up. “No way I’m letting him win this time!”
負けじとウサギは飛び起きた。「今度こそ勝たせるもんか！」
He dashed ahead again, but to his surprise, Turtle was already nearing the finish line.
ウサギは再び全力で走り出したが、驚いたことにカメはすでにゴールに近づいていた。
“Wait! How did you get so far?” Rabbit shouted.
「待て！なんでそんなに進んでるんだ？」とウサギは叫んだ。
Turtle smiled. “I told you, slow and steady wins the race.”
カメは笑って言った。「言っただろ、ゆっくりでも確実に進めば勝つんだよ。」
Rabbit sped up, but it was too late. Turtle crossed the finish line first.
ウサギはスピードを上げたが、時すでに遅し。カメが先にゴールラインを越えた。
Panting, Rabbit collapsed beside Turtle. “Alright, alright… you win. Again.”
息を切らしながら、ウサギはカメの隣に倒れこんだ。「分かったよ、分かった…また君の勝ちだ。」
Turtle chuckled softly. “Doesn’t matter who wins, Rabbit. What matters is that we never stop trying.”
カメは静かに笑って言った。「勝敗なんてどうでもいいんだよ、ウサギ。大事なのは、挑戦し続けることさ。」
Rabbit blinked, then smiled. “Yeah… I guess you’re right. Same time next year?”
ウサギは瞬きをしてから笑った。「そうだな…君の言う通りかもな。来年も同じ時間にやるか？」
Turtle nodded. “I’ll be here.”
カメはうなずいた。「もちろんだよ。」
And so, on that quiet Halloween night, even though no one watched, the race was run, and the lesson was learned.
こうして、誰も見ていなかったハロウィンの夜、競争は行われ、教訓が刻まれた。
Sometimes, the greatest races are the ones we run for ourselves.
時には、自分のために走るレースこそが最も大切なのだ。
