忘れられないハロウィン

A Halloween to Remember

The moon was high, casting an eerie glow over the streets, as costumes of every kind flooded the neighborhood.
月が高く昇り、不気味な光を通りに投げかける中、さまざまなコスチュームを着た人々が街にあふれていた。

Sarah adjusted her witch hat and looked around the crowded room of the Halloween party she had reluctantly attended.
サラは魔女の帽子を直し、嫌々来たハロウィンパーティーの混み合った部屋を見渡した。

"I really should have stayed home," she muttered to herself, taking a sip of her punch.
「やっぱり家にいればよかった」と彼女はつぶやきながら、パンチを一口飲んだ。

Just as she turned to leave, someone bumped into her.
帰ろうとしたその時、誰かが彼女にぶつかった。

"Whoa, sorry about that!" a man dressed as a vampire said, quickly catching her arm before she could spill her drink.
「おっと、ごめん！」ヴァンパイアの格好をした男が言い、彼女が飲み物をこぼしそうになるのを素早く腕で支えた。

Sarah laughed nervously. "It's okay, no harm done."
サラは緊張して笑った。「大丈夫、大したことないわ。」

"I'm Jack, by the way. Guess I really made an entrance, huh?" He grinned, his fangs looking almost real.
「俺はジャック、よろしく。それにしても、派手に登場しちゃったな？」と彼はにっこり笑い、牙が本物のように見えた。

"Sarah," she replied, smiling. "And yeah, you definitely did."
「サラよ」と彼女は笑顔で答えた。「うん、確かにそうね。」

They exchanged a few more awkward pleasantries before Jack asked, "So, what's a witch like you doing alone at a party like this?"
ぎこちない会話を少し交わした後、ジャックが尋ねた。「で、こんなパーティーで一人の魔女が何してるの？」

Sarah shrugged. "Honestly? I got dragged here by my friends. I'm not really into parties."
サラは肩をすくめた。「正直に言うと、友達に引っ張られてきたの。あんまりパーティーは得意じゃなくて。」

"Same here. I came with my buddies, but they disappeared somewhere. Typical, right?"
「俺も同じだよ。友達と来たんだけど、どこかに消えちゃった。いつものことさ。」

"Yeah, typical," Sarah agreed, her smile softening.
「そうね、よくある話だわ」とサラは同意し、微笑みが柔らかくなった。

For the next hour, they found themselves deep in conversation, talking about everything from Halloween memories to their favorite horror movies.
次の1時間、二人は話に夢中になり、ハロウィンの思い出やお気に入りのホラー映画について語り合った。

"I can't believe you haven't seen Hocus Pocus," Sarah said in disbelief.
「ホーカス・ポーカスを見たことないなんて信じられない」とサラは驚いた声で言った。

"I know, I know! Everyone says that. I guess I'll have to watch it now," Jack replied, holding up his hands in mock defense.
「わかってる、わかってる！みんなに言われるよ。でも、今度見てみるよ」とジャックは両手を上げて冗談ぽく言った。

As the night grew later, the party began to die down, but neither Sarah nor Jack seemed eager to leave.
夜が更け、パーティーが静まり始めたが、サラもジャックも帰る気配はなかった。

"Want to get some fresh air?" Jack suggested.
「外で少し風に当たらない？」とジャックが提案した。

Sarah nodded, and they stepped out into the chilly October night. The sound of distant laughter and music faded as they walked down the quiet street.
サラはうなずき、二人は冷え込んだ10月の夜空の下へと出た。遠くから聞こえる笑い声や音楽は、彼らが静かな通りを歩くにつれて消えていった。

"This has been... surprisingly fun," Sarah admitted, glancing at Jack.
「思ったより、楽しかったわ」とサラはジャックを見ながら言った。

"Yeah, same here. I didn’t expect to meet anyone interesting tonight," Jack replied, his tone softer than before.
「うん、俺も。今夜、誰か面白い人に会えるなんて思わなかった」とジャックは先ほどより柔らかい声で言った。

They stopped under a streetlamp, its light casting long shadows.
二人は街灯の下で立ち止まり、その光が長い影を落としていた。

"So, do you believe in fate?" Jack asked, half-joking.
「ねえ、運命って信じる？」とジャックは半分冗談っぽく尋ねた。

Sarah looked at him, her eyes twinkling in the dim light. "Maybe. Do you?"
サラは彼を見つめ、薄暗い光の中で目を輝かせた。「どうかしら。あなたは？」

Jack smiled. "After tonight? Yeah, I think I do."
ジャックは笑った。「今夜のことを考えると？うん、信じるよ。」

The night ended with a quiet understanding between them, a feeling that neither could quite explain but both knew was real.
夜が終わる頃、二人の間には言葉では説明できない静かな共感が生まれていたが、それが本物だとお互い感じていた。

As they exchanged numbers and said their goodbyes, Sarah couldn’t help but feel that maybe, just maybe, fate had indeed brought them together.
連絡先を交換し、別れを告げた時、サラは思わず感じていた。もしかしたら、本当に運命が二人を引き合わせたのかもしれないと。
