サウンドオブナイトメアとは、大人気シリーズのリトルナイトメアのオーディオフィクションでの番外編ということでyoutubeにアップされている動画です。リトルナイトメア本編の考察に大きく影響する内容で、是非ご覧いただきたいものですが、折角なので英語で聞いたり見たりして勉強もしちゃおう！という魂胆です。合計チャプター6本あり、日本語字幕verもございますので全訳はそちらも参照ください。今回はchapter1のsession1〈Intro〉(Youtubeのchapters機能で確認できます)です。
あらすじ
とある少女ヌーンは精神症状が悪化した為、精神科医オットーの病棟に入院してきます。そして悪夢を見るようになったこの少女はオットーのカウンセリングを受けることになります。この少女の語るリアルな悪夢がオットーにとってどのような意味になるのか、、、。

session1-1〈Intro〉
[OTTO] Yesterday evening marked my first true session with the girl. Signs of significant disorder are greater than I initially thought. Her imagination is vast, but one phrase in particular has become an earworm of sorts.
[NOONE] He was right in front of me, breathing hard. That's what I remember most. The awful smell. Like when sausage goes bad.
[OTTO] Scent while dreaming, is a rarity and indication of sensory transcendence.
She may be a fine candidate for oneirological study, but her health must come first. There are undoubtedly other details I missed in her recount, from the top then. Sleep be damned tonight.

【解説】
l1.“Yesterday evening marked my first true session with the girl”は、はじめに時制があり、その後markedという動詞があります。時制＋markで“その時間に〜という（〜した）ことが示された”という時間を強調するような文章になっています。
そのためyesterday evening（昨日の夕方）が副詞句、marked（過去）が動詞でその後に目的語があるということですね。
l5.Like when sausage goes bad.の“like”は“好き”ではなく、“〜のような”という前置詞です。ここでの‘go’の訳は‘行く’ではありません．’go’の元々のイメージは“話し手（聞き手）や話題になっている場所から遠ざかる”ことを表現しています．新鮮なsausageがbad（腐る）方に遠く離れてしまう表現です．
l7.her health must come first. の‘come’は直訳で‘来る’では文脈に合いません．’come’の元々のイメージは“話し手（聞き手）や話題になっている場所に近づいていく”ことを表します．その為、“彼女の健康が‘first’＝‘第一優先’に近づかなければならない”を自然にして“彼女の健康が第一優先でなければならない”となります．
session1-2〈Intro〉
[OTTO] This is the Counsellor. Here in my preliminary case notes for tape number 54, Session number one, Patient #1220, referring to children by numbers... Our relationship goes beyond mereethics, so I can leave that practice to the heartlessquacks on the upper floors. But to remain professional, I'll use a moniker the girl's given herself, Noone.
Noone has been in CPI care for a fortnight. Given her rather remarkable medical history, her mental state seems relatively unremarkable. She finds herself in my warddue toworsening. Though not recurring, nightly afflictions.
Parasomnia isn't uncommon among patients. Not to imply she's unworthy of treatment, only that there are others worse off. Noone also displays signs of mild trauma. As such, nightmare disorder is possible. Given her diffidence, the focus for this session is to build rapport. I'm hopeful Noone will open up and we'll learn what lies inside that little head.

【解説】
l2.referring to children by numbersは“子供を番号で指す”となります。referは‘参照する、紹介する’など他の意味もあります。また、refer to A as Bでも‘AをBと呼ぶ’という表現になります。この文脈ではby numberで“名前ではなく‘数字で’”という意味になります。
l3. I can leave that practice to the heartless quacks on the upper floors. は直訳で‘私はそのやり方を上の階にいる冷酷なヤブ医者たちに任せることができる。’となります。leaveには‘去る’、‘残す’などありますが‘任せる’の意味もあり、that practieが目的語で‘そのやり方を任せる’となります。また、the upper floorsは‘上層部’と捉えるのが自然です。なので“そのやり方を上層部にいる冷酷なヤブ医者に任せればいい”と訳すのが自然ですね．
l6.Given her rather remarkable medical history, her mental state seems relatively unremarkable.この文章はカンマで主文と従属節に分かれており、前者が従属節、後者が主文になります。その為主語は‘her mental state’で動詞が’seems’です。一番初めの’given’は‘〜を考慮に入れると’という前置詞になります。’rather remarkable’＝‘かなりの注目すべき’で‘medical history’＝‘病歴’を修飾しており、前者全体で“彼女のかなり注目すべき病歴を考えると”という意味になります。後者も合わせると“彼女のかなり注目すべき病歴を考えると、彼女の精神状態は比較的普通に見える”という意味になります。
