Battery-powered car batteries

This weekend, our house was fitted with a charging outlet. I immediately plugged in the plug-in hybrid (PHV) that I bought three weeks ago. It is 100% charged in about 3 hours. I can drive about 30km on electric power alone. The necessary transportation in the car for daily life can be done only by electricity.



I immediately tried driving the car on electricity only. I switched the driving mode to "electric-only running mode". It's quiet. The car accelerates smoothly and quietly with a slippery feeling.



I wonder which brand of batteries are in this car? I was curious, so I searched the internet. Apparently it's made by Samsung SDI.



The car I'm driving is a 2017 model. The latest model has had minor changes in September 2019 and has 30% more range on batteries alone. It's increasing. And to my surprise, its latest model of battery is made by CATL. CATL is one of the world's top three automotive battery manufacturers.



Because it's a minor change, the body of the car itself has not undergone any major changes. However, the fact that the vehicle's driving distance was increased by 30% must be due to the major evolution of the batteries. A closer examination reveals a 30% increase in battery capacity. So the increase in driving range is mostly thanks to the battery changes. If the body of the car hasn't changed, then the size of the battery is probably not changing either, so it means CATL battery can store 30% more power for the same size.


Every two years of minor changes can change the battery manufacturer to make a major improvement in driving performance. I didn't realize that cars had already come to this point in time.



My job is to provide the automation that supports manufacturing. Both automobiles and automotive batteries are important customers for automation. Among them, the field of electrified parts, including automotive batteries, is one of the most rapidly changing and growing. The methods of automation are evolving rapidly. And the automobile is an important industry in the country where I live and work. So I'm paying very close attention and I'm keeping an eye on the changes and trends.
