Born in Naples. Author, screenwriter. After graduating from university, he taught at a high school in Rome and was active in the cultural section of the newspaper ``Il Manifesto.''
He made his debut as a writer with Kodankara in 1987, and has released a series of works set in educational settings, as well as working as a screenwriter for movies and dramas.

1987年、『教壇から』で作家デビュー。教育現場を舞台にした作品を次々に発表し、映画やテレビドラマの脚本家としても活躍。
ストレーガ賞（イタリア語: Premio Strega）は、年1度イタリアの作家による散文小説に対して贈られるイタリア文学界最高の賞である。前年の5月1日から同年の4月30日に出版されたものが対象作品となる。2014年にはイタリア語に翻訳されたヨーロッパ文学を対象としたストレーガ・エウロペオ賞（イタリア語: Premio Strega Europeo）が創設された。
