直島出身。三菱マテリアルを定年退職後、観光協会で初代事務局長を務める。

Born in Naoshima. After retiring from Mitsubishi Materials, he served as the first secretary general of the local tourism association.

高校のスポーツテストでは学校で一番でな、野球と柔道、両方の部活をやってた。青年男子100mで国体にも2年連続出場したんや。日体大への推薦をもらったんやけど、父を戦争で亡くして、母1人で育ててもらってたのもあって、父も勤めていた三菱マテリアルに就職した。そこで出会った看護師の女性と結婚してからは、島で最初のコーヒー屋を始めたり、運動具店や釣具屋もやっとった。それから電気屋もしてなぁ。大阪から修行して帰ってきた息子が日本料理屋をするっていうんで今の店ができて、今は孫が店主をやっとる。私の誇りは親子4代、直島で続いていることやなぁ。今月は夫婦で米寿のお祝いやから家族みんな集まるのが楽しみや。

I was good at sports and participated in the 100meter sprint at the national competition when I was a student. My father died in the war and my mother raised me alone, so after graduation I worked at the Mitsubishi Materials. Since I got married, started the first coffee shop on the island. Now, my grandson runs the Japanese restaurant that my son started.
