イギリス・パンケーキレースの旅(7)〜子どもレースを日本と中継 The Pancake Race Trip 7〜Children's Race Relayed Live with Japan

パンケーキレースの朝は意外と静かな始まりでした。日本みたいにどこかからお囃子が聞こえたり、開催を知らせる空包が鳴ることもなく、本当に始まるのかと少々心配していました。

10時に子ども達のレースから始まると聞いたので9時に会場に行きましたが誰もいません。9時40分くらいからようやく人が集まり、ナーサリーごとのエプロンを着けてスポンサーのTeflonから支給された小さなフライパンを持って準備をします。

パンケーキはナーサリーの先生が用意していましたが、何もなくフライパンだけで走るチームもありました。30mくらいの短いコースですが、途中で引き返す子、結果に満足できず泣き出す子、子どもの反応は世界共通で、思わず頬が緩みます。

沿道には保護者がカメラを構えてずらっと並んでいます。でも何だか日本と雰囲気がちょっと違います。日本だと自分の子どものベストショットを逃すまいと殺気すら感じる撮影風景ですが、ここではみんなゆったりしている感じです。コース上では一輪車に乗ったおじさんがちょっとした芸をしてみんなを楽しませています。必死に撮影しているのは私くらいで、観客は「記録」よりその場の雰囲気や応援の方を楽しんでいる印象でした。

そう考えると冒頭で話した人の集まり方も頷けます。日本みたいに「滞りなく」「完璧に」で押し潰されそうな緊張感はありません。もう75年もやっているので慣れているのかもしれませんが。

私は日本のCECの子ども達とオンラインで繋がって、レースの様子を中継しました。久しぶり（と言っても先週の木曜以来ですが笑）に子ども達の顔を見て、無性に会いたくなりました。この場に一緒にいたらどんなに楽しかったでしょう。

11時55分からいよいよ大人（オルニー在住の女性のみ参加できます）のレースです。何とランナーの中には日本人の女性もいました。これはまた後ほど書きます。

The morning of the Pancake Race started off surprisingly quiet. I was a little worried that the race might not really start, as there was no musical accompaniment coming from anywhere nor a salute of guns like in Japan.

I was told that the children's race would start at 10am, so I went to the venue at 9 am, but no one was there. People finally gathered at the time of half past nine, wearing each nursery's aprons and carrying small pans provided by the sponsor, Teflon.

The children's pancakes were prepared by the nursery teachers, but some teams ran with nothing on it but the frying pans. There were lots of things happening and dramas only in the 30 m, which reminded me that children's reactions are the same in the world- some turned back halfway through and others cried because they are not satisfied with their results. You can't help but a smile on your face.

Parents lined up along the roadside with their cameras ready. The atmosphere was a little different from Japan. Japanese parents are desperate not to miss best shot of your child  Here, people looked more relaxed. There was an old man on a unicycle entertained everyone with a little trick. It seemed only me who was frantically filming. I got the impression that the spectators were enjoying the atmosphere rather than "recording" the event.

When you think of it, it's no wonder the people don't gather early as I mentioned at the beginning of this article. There is no tension like in Japan, where you are crushed by "without delay" and "perfectly". Maybe they used to it because it's been done for 75 years.

I connected online with the CEC children in Japan to broadcast the race. Seeing the children's faces in meeting app made me miss them so much though only a week had passed. How fun it would have been to be here with them.

After the children's race, the main (adult's) race will start at 11:55am. Only women living or working in Olney for more than two years are eligible for the race. To my surprise, there was a Japanese woman among the runners. I will write more about this later.
