イギリス・パンケーキレースの旅 (10)〜行き詰まる計画 The Pancake Race Trip 10　 - The Deadlocked Plan

オルニーに着いた初日にティムに会えたことは本当にラッキーでした。彼がいなかったらこの旅は全く違うものになっていたでしょう。前回も書きましたが彼はカンザス州リベラルのパンケーキレースアンバサダーとしてオルニーを訪れており、社交的というのは彼のためにあるような言葉で、私より2日早く到着しただけなのに町のほとんどを知り尽くし、すでにちょっとした有名人になっていました。私は運営委員長のディビッドと連絡をとっていたものの、当然ながら彼は準備に忙しくて、代わりにティムに私のお世話を頼んだのでした。

早速ティムは「まずはお茶でも」と町の中心にあるパンケーキパーラーに案内してくれました。お互い自己紹介をし、ここへきた経緯などあれこれお喋りした後に私は思い切って現在行き詰まっている計画について相談してみました。パンケーキレースを見た後にオルニーの小学校を訪問してみたいと思っていたのです。学校がハーフターム（この時期の10日ほどの休暇）に入る前に２つの小学校にメールで依頼をしていましたが、どちらからも返事をもらえずにいたのです。再度メールをしてもそれでも連絡はありませんでした。

そこでティムはパーラーで働くセリーナに事情を話し、セリーナは「それならもう一つInfant schoolがあるよ」とすぐに携帯を手にとって直接学校へ電話をかけてくれたのです。しかし残念ながら「事前のアポなしには難しい。担当もいないので返事はできない」とやんわり断られてしまいました。

「それならメールした学校へ直接行ってお願いしよう！」

行動的で社交的なティムの次策への決断は早く、すぐにセリーナに学校の場所を聞き、急いでお茶を飲み干してバタバタと２人でパーラーを飛び出ていきました。私もいざとなったら突撃訪問するしかないと思っていたので、同行してくれる仲間ができたのは心強かった。オルニーは小さな町なので、実際に会って話を聞いてくれれば何とかなるのではと考えていました。

ところが昨今の学校のセキュリティー対策は都会も田舎も関係ないというのを認識することになります。まず訪問者はカメラでスキャンされ、I Dが発行されます。もちろんアポなしでは校長先生には会えません。饒舌なティムが私の３倍くらい説得力のある会話で受付の人にお願いしてくれましたが、身元が確認できないと（犯罪歴がないとか）訪問や面会は難しいという回答でした。

残念だけどうちの学校でもそうするはずと半ば納得して、名刺だけお渡しして学校を後にしました。ここから日本人女性のご主人へと話は続いていくのです。

I was very lucky to meet Tim on our first day in Olney. Without him, this trip would have been completely different. As I mentioned last time, he was visiting Olney as a pancake race ambassador for Liberal, Kansas. Sociable is the word for him. Even though he had only arrived two days before me, he knew most of the town and was already a bit of a celebrity. I had been in touch with David, the steering committee chairperson, but, of course, he was busy with preparations, so he asked Tim to take care of me instead.

Tim promptly took me to a pancake parlor in the center of town for tea first. After we introduced ourselves and chatted about how we came to be here, I boldly asked him about a plan I was stuck on. I wanted to visit an elementary school in Olney after seeing the pancake race. I had emailed two elementary schools before school started half-term (a 10-day vacation at this time of year) with a request, but had not received a response from either of them. I emailed again and still had not heard from them.

So Tim told Serena, who works in the parlor, about the situation, and she immediately picked up the phone and called the school directly, saying, "There is another Infant school for that." Unfortunately, however, the recipient said, "It is difficult to make an appointment without much prior notice. There is no one in charge, so I can't give you a reply."

All right. Let's go directly to the school you e-mailed and ask, then!"

Tim, who is very active and sociable, quickly decided on his next plan. He immediately asked Serena where the school was located, finished his tea quickly and went toward the door to go. I knew that if push came to shove, I would have no choice but to make a surprise visit, so it was reassuring to have a companion to accompany me. Olney is a small town, so I thought that if I actually met them and talked to them, I could make it work.

However, I would come to realize that school security measures these days don't care if you are in the city or the suburbs. First, visitors are scanned by camera and issued an I D. Of course, you cannot meet the principal without an appointment. Tim, who is a great talker, asked the receptionist in a conversation that was much more persuasive than mine, but the response was that it would be difficult to visit or see him unless my identity could be verified (no criminal record, etc.).

I half-convinced myself that our school would do the same, and left the school after handing over only my business card. The story continues from here to the Japanese woman's husband.
