1 庄内の文人たち
庄内地方は鶴岡市生まれの高山樗牛(ちょぎゅう)、田澤稲舟(いなぶね)、酒田市生まれの阿部次郎など明治の文豪を輩出、大正・昭和では鶴岡市生まれの丸谷才一、藤沢周平、稀有の碩学で「知の巨人」と言われる渡部昇一、佐藤賢一(直木三十五賞受賞)と続く。関東軍参謀として満州事変と満州国建設を指揮したことで知られる石原莞(いしわらかん)爾(じ)の故郷でもあり、東京裁判の時に東条(とうじょう)英機(ひでき)の頭をたたいたことで知られる国粋主義的思想家大川周明の育った地でもある。大川周明は、丸谷才一の『裏声で歌へ君が代』に出てくる右翼的な人物(大田黒周道)のモデルである。小説家の森敦(あつし)(一九一二~一九八九)は昭和二十六年夏から翌年にかけて鶴岡市(旧朝日村)注連寺に滞在し、当時の生活をモチーフに描いた小説『月山』で昭和四十九年芥川賞受賞。その後も庄内に滞在し旧朝日村名誉村民となった。

1 Writers of Shonai
The Shonai region produced great writers of the Meiji period, such as Takayama Chogyu, Tazawa Inabune, who were born in Tsuruoka City, and Abe Jiro, who was born in Sakata City, and in the Taisho and Showa eras, such as Tsuruoka City-born Maruya Saiichi, who was born in Tsuruoka City, Shuhei Fujisawa, Shoichi Watanabe, who is said to be a ``giant of knowledge'' due to his rare academic ability, and Kenichi Sato (winner of the Naoki Sanjugo Prize). It is also the hometown of Ishiwara Kanji, who is known for directing the Manchurian Incident and the construction of Manchukuo as a staff officer of the Kwantung Army, and it is also the hometown of Kanji Ishihara, who is known for directing the Manchurian Incident and the construction of Manchukuo as a staff officer of the Kwantung Army. It is also the birthplace of Shumei Okawa, a nationalist thinker known for his work. Novelist Atsushi Mori (1912-1989) stayed at Churenji Temple in Tsuruoka City (formerly Asahi Village) from the summer of 1950 to the following year and wrote novels based on the life of that time. He won the Akutagawa Prize in 1961 for his novel "Mt.Gassan." After that, he continued to stay in Shonai and became an honorary villager of the former Asahi Village. (To be continued)
