The Essence of Life and Words
Humans think through words. It is "language" that makes humans human. However, the essence of life is not language. There is something more universal within life—something that defines life itself.
Tao calls this the "Five Emotions": joy, anger, sorrow, pleasure, and desire. Words are unnecessary for these emotions. Dogs, cats, birds, and all living beings possess them, even without language.
This morning, while preparing to open the shop, I was struck by the fragrance of lilies near the door. Like Proust’s madeleine, I was reminded of the "Five Emotions" of the lily.
With all its might, with its entire being, the lily fulfills its life. There is no hesitation in facing death. In truth, humans, too, come suddenly and leave just as suddenly. They wither and fall without a grand finale. And yet, they live with all their strength. The fragrance, the way it stands—it is an expression of gratitude for being alive.
Will I leave with a smile, or with grievances, dissatisfaction, and anxiety? As life enters its autumn, this becomes the most important question—how to exist, how to be. Above all else, the most important thing is to live each day simply, brightly, and honestly.
That realization sent shivers down my spine. Had I forgotten something so simple?
Dream, struggle, fail. Dream again, struggle, fail again.
And yet, despite it all, I have been able to leave behind two angels. I am grateful for the love of my wife and children, who support me.
And now, for the sincere passion of my comrades who fight alongside me.
On this early spring morning, as I sat on the terrace in front of the shop, I found myself staring at an old photograph I always keep in my planner—a picture of my wife and children from my days in NYC. Tears would not stop falling.
At the end of my journey, once again, I meet the great river.
旅の末 また大川に 巡り合う
