The test for Group B streptococcus in Japan①
A group B streptococcus test — also known as a group B strep test — checks to see if you are infected with the group B streptococcus bacteria. It's a common bacterium in the gastrointestinal tract, but can cause serious infections in newborns.
In Japan, around between weeks 33-37, all pregnant women are routinely tested for GBS.
The test itself is really simple. A large cotton swab is used to collect samples form the vagina.
If the group B strep test is negative, no action is needed. If the group B strep test is positive, you'll be given antibiotics during labour to prevent group B strep disease in your baby.
What kind of treatment do we do in Japan?
Will explain next week!
