Let's describe Tanabata in English! ～七夕を英語で説明してみよう～

こんにちは。

あっという間に2024年も半分が過ぎてもう7月！

ということで、今日は「七夕」についてなるべくシンプルに
日本語＆英語で紹介してみようと思います🌌🎋🌟

①七夕って何？
What is Tanabata？

七夕とは英語では Star Festival と呼ばれます。
Tanabata is known as "Star Festival" in English.

中国の言い伝えによると、七夕は織姫と彦星の愛の物語です。
According to the Chinese legend, it's a love story of Orihime and Hikoboshi.

皇帝の娘だった織姫はとても織物が上手で、毎日一生懸命働いていました。
Orihime, the Weaver Star (Vega) who was the daughter of an emperor was a hard worker and weaved beautifully for her father.

ただ、織姫はいつも1人で働いていたため、父親は彼女が寂しがっていることを心配し、彦星を紹介しました。
Because she spent most of her time working alone, her father was worried and introduced Hikoboshi to her.

2人は出会うとすぐに恋に落ち、結婚しました。
Once they saw each other, Orihime and Hikoboshi fell in love instantly and got married. 

一緒にいることが嬉しくて、2人は働くことを止め、怠け者になってしまいました。
They were so happy together that they stopped working and became lazy. 

これに怒った父親は二人を天の川で引き離しました。
That made Orihime's father very angry and separated the two from each other by the Milky Way. 

織姫は泣きながら父親に彦星に会いたいと訴え、年に一度、7月7日に会うことを許されました。
Orihime cried and asked her father to see him and he decided that they could meet only once a year on the 7th of July. 

これが七夕祭りの始まりと言われています。
That is how the celebration and festival are believed to originate.

②七夕っていつ？
When is Tanabata?

元々は太陰太陽暦に基づいて7番目の月の7番目の日に祝われていました。
The original Tanabata date was on the 7th day in the 7th month based on the Japanese lunisolar calendar.

現在では、多くの場所で7月7日に祝われますが、日本の一部では旧暦に基づいて8月に祝うところもあります。
Nowadays, it is usually celebrated on July 7th in many places, but some parts of Japan celebrate it in August based on the lunar calendar.

③七夕って何をするの？
What do people do to celebrate Tanabata?

よく知られているのは、短冊を書いて笹に飾ります。
Many people write their wishes on paper strips, called Tanzaku, and hang them on bamboo branches. 

7月になると至る所で短冊で飾られた笹を見ることがあるでしょう。
You'll often see bamboo trees decorated this way in many places across Japan in July.

短冊を自由に書ける場所もあるので、見かけたらやってみても楽しいかもしれませんね！
They might provide Tanzaku for you to write your wishes on and hang them on the bamboo. It can be a fun experience to try when you come across one!
