InterviewExcited challenge to reach the summit of Pungi, an unprecedented climb. 「インタビュー」「憧れの山にたどり着いた感動は止まらなかった」前人未踏のプンギ峰登頂に成功した芹沢太陽さん
Five Japanese university students succeeded in climbing Pungi (6,524 meters above sea level), an unclimbed peak in the Nepalese Himalayas, on October 12, 2024. One of the five who accomplished this feat was Taiyo Serizawa, 21, a third-grader in the Faculty of Letters at Chuo University. The other members of the team are Takuma Inoue (22, Aoyama Gakuin University), Ryoya Otaka (22、Tokyo University), Fumiya Yokomichi (22、Rikkyo University), and Masahiro Nakazawa (21, Rikkyo University). They are all male students. They met at a regular meeting of the student section of the Japan Alpine Club. Hakumon Herald interviewed Serizawa about his motivation for starting mountaineering and his impressions of the first ascent of Pungi.
日本の大学生５人が２０２４年１０月１２日、ネパール・ヒマラヤ山脈にある未踏峰の「プンギ」（標高６５２４メートル）の登頂に成功した。この偉業を成し遂げた現役の大学生５人のうちの1人が中央大学の芹沢太陽さん（２１歳、文学部３年）だ。その他の登頂メンバーは、井之上巧磨さん（２２歳、青山学院大）、尾高涼哉さん（同、東京大）、横道文哉さん（同、立教大）、中沢将大さん（２１歳、立教大）。彼らは日本山岳会学生部の定例会にて出会った。芹沢さんに登山を始めた動機やプンギ初登頂の感想などを聞いてみた。
―What made you start mountaineering?
Serizawa: I actually started mountaineering after entering Chuo University. In high school, I was torn between joining the table tennis club and the wondervogel club, but in the end I joined the table tennis club. I had been interested in mountaineering itself in high school, but it wasn't until I entered college that I actually joined a mountaineering club and started climbing mountains. I chose the club because I think it was a reaction to not being physically active during the university entrance exam period.
―登山を始めたきっかけは。
芹沢 登山を始めたのは実は中央大に入学してからです。高校のときは卓球部とワンダーフォーゲル部のどちらに所属するかを迷いましたが、結局は卓球部に入りました。登山への興味自体は高校の頃からありましたが、実際に登山部に所属し、山に登り始めたのは大学に入ってからということになります。登山部を選択したのは、大学受験期に体を動かさなかった反動で登山へのモチベーションが上がったからだと思います。
―Why did you decide to climb Pungi?

Serizawa: There are many mountains in the world, but I chose Pungi because of my longing to climb an unclimbed peak. I felt the romance of a mountain that no one had ever climbed, and I was also stirred by the desire to leave my own footprints.
未踏峰の山に憧れとロマン
―プンギ峰に登ることを決意したわけは。
芹沢 世界にはさまざまな山がある中で、プンギ峰を選んだ理由はなんといっても未踏峰への憧れがあった
からです。誰も登ったことがない山というものにロマンを感じましたし、自分の足跡を残したいという欲望にもかき立てられました。
―It is amazing that you ascended to a mountain nearly twice the size of Mt. Fuji and an unexplored peak, even though you have just started mountaineering.
Serizawa: It is not uncommon for people who started mountaineering at university to aim to climb Himalayan peaks. Even if they are beginners, college students have time and physical strength, so there are some cases in which student climbers aim for more difficult mountains than experienced ones.
―登山を始めたばかりなのに富士山の２倍近い、しかも未踏峰の山に挑むというのはすごいですね。
芹沢 大学から登山を始めた人がヒマラヤ級の山に登ることを目指すことは、決してまれなことではないです。初心者であったとしても大学生には時間があり、体力もあるので、場合によっては登山経験豊富なベテランの方よりも難しい山を目指しやすいケースもあります。
―How did you feel when you made the first ascent of Pungi?
Serizawa: When I actually climbed the mountain of my dreams, I could not stop being impressed. The 360-degree view below me was far more beautiful than I had ever imagined. It was as if all my fatigue I had felt before the climb was swept away at once.
―プンギに初登頂したときの感想は。
芹沢 憧れの山に実際に辿りついた時は感動が止まりませんでした。眼下に広がる３６０度の景色は想像を遥かに超えて美しかった。登るまでの疲れがいっぺんに吹き飛ぶような思いでした。
ーWhat is the appeal of ountain climbing?
Serizawa: The first is the view you get when you reach the summit. There is an emotion there that you can't get just from watching a video or looking at a photo. Secondly, mountain climbing is not a competition like other sports. When climbing a mountain, we need to cooperate and help each other to reach the summit. It is not a competition, and everyone involved is a collaborator. The appeal of mountaineering is that everyone can take on the challenge as the main actor.
―登山の魅力とは。
芹沢 一つ目は、やはり登頂の際に見ることができる景色ですね。映像や写真などを見るだけでは分からない感動がそこにはあります。二つ目は、よくあるスポーツのように登山は競争ではありません。登山は仲間と協力、助け合って山頂を目指します。競争ではなく、携わる人は皆協力者となります。このように全員が主役として挑戦をすることができるのが登山の魅力です。
ーWhat would you like to say to the students?
Serizawa: I would like you to take the first step. I used to be not very adventurous and was afraid of change. However, when I was asked to climb Pungi, I answered “I'll go “ with courage, and this changed my character. I have gained the experience of deciding to do something once and taking action toward that goal through this mountaineering trip, and I can now believe that anything can be managed with vitality.
「まず一歩を踏み出そう」
―学生たちに伝えたいことは。
芹沢 ぜひ、一歩を踏み出してほしい。私も元々はあまり冒険せず、変化を恐れる性格でした。しかし、プンギ峰に登らないかという誘いに「行きます！」と勇気をもって答えたことで、この性格も変わりました。一度やると決めて、その目標に向けて行動するという経験を今回の登山を通して得たことにより、なにごともバイタリティで何とかなると思うことができるようになりました。
―What is your next goal?

Serizawa: I would like to successfully climb mountains overseas again in 2026, the 100th anniversary of the Chuo University Mountaineering Club. We are currently recruiting members for the club, so please join us! (Interviewed by Kotone Hoshino)

<Impressions after the interview>
Although Serizawa has accomplished a great feat, there was nothing pompous about him. On the contrary, his charming personality was impressive. “We talked about trivial things throughout the grueling climb,” he replied charmingly. With his motivation and vitality further heightened by his ascent to the summit of Pungi, Serizawa will continue to take on new challenges. Saying “I'll join you,” he stepped forward. His first step may serve as a guide for those of us who have yet to take their first step.

偉業を成し遂げた芦沢さんだが、偉ぶるところは一切なく、逆に愛嬌のある人柄が印象的だった。「過酷な登山中、ずっとくだらない話をしていましたよ」と愛嬌たっぷりに答えてくれた。プンギ登頂を経てさらに高まったモチベーションとバイタリティを持って、芦沢さんは挑戦を続ける。「行きます！」と言って、前に踏み出した芦沢さん。その一歩は、まだ一歩も踏み出していない私たちの道しるべとなっていくのかもしれない。
