世界中の都市の妙齢の女性たちの日々の様子を追いかけるReal Housewives シリーズにハマって、時には5エピソード見る日もあった。
メルボルン、シドニー、オークランド、ニューヨーク、ビバリーヒルズなどなどを見てきたが、かなり国民性が反映され、文化の違いをまざまざと感じることができ、個人的には文化人類学になると思う。世界中のハイエンドファッションの流行の発信地がヨーロッパにあって、同じものを着るにしても、なぜか着こなしが都市によって大きく変わってくる。コミュニケーションの取り方も全く違う。ビバリーヒルズではどんなに腹の底が煮え繰り返っていても、笑顔で挨拶する一方、オーストラリアでは腹の中は余すことなくぶっ放す。ニュージーランドのオークランドにはオーストラリアより洗練されたヨーロッパの影響を感じたし、同じアメリカでもニューヨーカーが強くたくましく生きる一方、ビバリーヒルズでは華やかさや、どう自分を見せるかがキーになっていた。Housewivesというタイトルなのに、ニューヨークの出演者達の全員がシングルで、そんなところも都市の文化が反映されているなぁと感じた。
リアリティーショーというと、頭ごなしにクズという人もいるけれど、異なる文化もを持つ同僚とどうせすればよいかわからなくて悩んでいたときに随分と救われた。あ、みんなも色々あるのかと安心することもできたし、我慢して自分を抑えなきゃいけない時は、テレビの中で叫びまくっている女性を見て、気分をすっきりさせることもできた。ゲームのFirst Person Shooting のような要素なんだと思う。
熱狂的なファンの中には出演者のツイッターやインスタグラムアカウントをフォローして居る人もいる。距離感はそれぞれだけど、海外に住む日本人女性だったら、見てホッとしたり刺激になったりすることが多かれ少なかれあるはずと信じて疑わない。

I was very much into “Real Housewives of XX” series, which show daily life of middle-age rich ladies living in big cities around the world. I was so addicted that I sometimes watched 5 episodes in a day.
Melbourne, Sydney, Auckland, New York and Beverly Hills are the ones I watched, each reflecting their culture and I think it is a good Anthropology study.
While the center of high-end fashion is in Europe and these ladies wear these clothes, they look different depending on the city. The communication style is also very different. Ladies greet smiling even when they are very mad in Beverly Hills. On the other hand, in Australia, ladies express whatever is in their mind. I could feel sophistication influenced by European culture in Auckland, which I could not find in the series in Australia. Even in the same country, in the US, while ladies from New York are surviving in the cut-throat society, it seems what is important in Beverly Hills is to show how fabulous they are. In New York although the title holds the word “Housewives”, the casts were all single and I think it was just reflecting the culture of the city.
Some people hate reality shows and think that they are trashy no matter what sort, but I personally was saved by those when I was struggling to cope with cultural differences. I was relieved to know that ladies are also struggling for interpersonal relationships, and also, when I know I need to hold myself, it was good to see ladies exploding instead of me. I think they are like First Person Shooting game for ladies.
If you are a Japanese lady living overseas, I believe this is something to relieve you or to give you some stimulation.
