Return and Earn

モールのすぐ裏に住んでいるのですが、モール内にReturn and Earnが有ります。Return and Earnとは、飲料用ボトルや缶をリサイクル用に戻すと、１０セントがもらえるという仕組み。ウエブサイトによると、毎年出る1億６千もの空き缶、空き瓶、飽きボトルを少しでも減らすため、リサイクルをしてお金を稼ぎながら環境を保護しようというプロジェクトです。

昔、オーストラリア人の同僚が子供の教育用にと、空き缶、空きボトルを集めていました。私はずっと、環境保護に熱心なオーストラリアならではの素晴らしいプロジェクトだなぁと思っていたのですが、この間、大分違う考え方を聞きました。

中国系が住む人が多い地域では、このReturn and EarnにベンツやBMWなど高級車の列ができているらしいのです。それを教えてくれた方が言うには、中国系や一銭たりとも無駄にしないと言う精神でこれまで巨万の富を築き上げてきた、その証明がこの行列だとのこと。

なるほど、納得。私の周りにも、国籍問わず、結構な数の富裕な方々がいらっしゃいますが、彼らみんな、買い物はディスカウントのタイミングだし、何か買いたいと言うと、真っ先にディスカウントをする方法を調べてくれます。これを機に、無理なく、少しでも節約する方法を常に意識して行きたいと思いました。

I live behind a mall, and there is Return and Earn where we can get 10 cents if we return bottles or cans for drinks in the mall. According to their website, more than 1.6 million cans and bottles are littered in a year. It is a project to save the planet while making money.

I remember my ex-colleague was collecting empty cans and bottles for her kids’ education, and I was thinking it is very Australia trying to protect the environment.

However, I heard another very interesting and very different story related to this the other day. There are always queues of Melcedes or BMW in front of these Return and Earn in area where residents are mostly Chinese. According to my friend, Chinese have made billions with spirits of not wasting a penny, and this is the proof of these minds.

This reminded me of some rich people I know, no matter where they are from. They always try to buy things with discounts. If I tell them I want to buy something, they check how I can save money. It does not mean they are cheap, it’s just that they always try to seek how we can save money. Moving forward, I will keep in mind to save money wisely.
