Van Gogh Aliveという展示に行ってきた。
Webサイトには、Van Goghの絵を鑑賞するだけでなく、その世界に自分達が吸い込まれていくと紹介されている。
入り口を過ぎると、絵の展示とそれぞれの絵に説明がついていて、Goghの人生について知ることができた。展示の一番奥のスペースで、クラシック音楽のBGMが響き渡る中、Goghの様々な絵が時代ごとに空間一杯に投射され、切り替わっていく。様々な絵と合わせてその当時のGoghの日記の内容も投影されていた。絵の鑑賞の仕方は人それぞれで、床に座る人、椅子に座る人、立って見る人、歩きながら見る人など、それぞれが各々のスタイルでその空間を楽しんでいた。Van Goghのことはあまり知らなかったけど、そこにいた１時間の間に彼の人生について、そこから生まれた絵について、様々なことを知ることができた。
少し下世話な話になるが、彼のPortrait of Dr. Gachetという絵が8250万ドルで日本人の齊藤了英という実業家に売り渡された。「死んだら棺桶に入れてもらうつもりだ」という斎藤の言葉が、「文化遺産を灰にするつもりか」と英仏の美術界から猛烈な非難を浴びる騒動を招いたという。その発言について、後に「作品に対する愛情を表現した言葉のあや」と残しているという説や、相続税を避けるためだったという説がある。結局オークションで落札されたというが、この一連の騒動をVan Goghは空からどう思って眺めていたのか、気になるところである。

“Don’t just admire Van Gogh’s paintings - immerse yourself in them” says the website.
After the entrance, there are paintings with detailed captions and I got to know about the life of Van Gogh. At the end, there was a space full of classical music and Gogh’s art works were projected on big screens by each phase.
Along with the paintings, diaries of Van Gogh were shown. There were people sitting on the floor, sitting on the chairs, admiring the paintings standing or walking. Each people enjoy the space with their own styles. I didn’t know about Van Gogh, but I got to know a lot about him within just an hour.
By the way, his artwork “Portrait of Dr. Gachet” was sold to Ryoei Saito, a Japanese businessman for 82.5 million dollars. Ryoei alleged to say that he wanted the painting to be put in the coffin when he died, then many French or British art authorities blamed him saying he wants to cremate the cultural heritage. About that comment, there are multiple explanation; it was just expression to show the affection towards the artwork, or just to avoid inheritance tax by his off springs. In the end, this painting was auctioned to another party. I am just wondering how Van Gogh was looking at this affair from the sky.
