Thank you Hayato Sumino for giving us these wonderful performances. 👏👏👏 Sad that I will not see your Concerto No. 1 in the Finals. But still, you gave us so much, all these gems already, and will watch for a long time. Can’t wait for your 2022 concerts. I hope tickets for live-streaming will be available for your viewers from abroad too.

It is no matter that Hayato Sumino is not included in the final stage. He is a man who transcends any competition or contest. He will one day become legend and be known far and wide--appreciated and beloved--his music immortal. The heavens speak through his fingers and his music touches our souls.

I am so disappointed that you didn't make the final round at the Chopin competition. Could please post you playing the concerto you would have played even it means with a pre-recorded orchestra? This oversight just means the jury didn't appreciate you the way millions of people do, even other pianists who had you on their lists for who should to be in the final. No doubt you will achieve the success you so deserve.

I got to know Hayato through Chopin Concours. I like Hayato's performance style.

Although all performers say they would interpret Chopin differently, they eventually move the same according to a certain manual of interpretation, and run on the same track as they did. However, Hayato's bold interpretation of his own came out on another track nicely. Hayato imagined what it would have been like to be Chopin 200 years ago, possessed by Chopin, and was playing as Chopin of the time. This was very fresh and unique, was more attractive. Chopin is said to have been a composer who plays improvisation for hours, and Hayato looks the most like Chopin. Hopefully Deutsch Gramophone contact to Hayato Sumino soon. If there were such a thing, modern Renaissance would occur in classical world.

Finally I didn't make it to the finals of the Chopin Competition, but it was a really valuable experience to have made it this far. Chopin is my idol, not just I love his works and want to study. I love him as an artist with good sense of beauty to music, and a strong soul.As a "popular" pianist on social media, I had a responsibility. I always tried to be Chopin and be natural with music because my performance could be someone's “first” Chopin. It would be a great honor if I could bring the charm of Chopin's music to people all over the world. I just go my own way. I will continue to make music the way I want it to be, the way it should be. Someday I want to be the kind of person that when I could meet Chopin, he'll be interested in me :)

Sumino Hayato will continue his authentic and essential path, leaving behind an experience that is certainly important for him. I will continue to listen and listen to his executions again, because it is good for my spirit.
The rest is and will be a show, which only amuses me, but does not feed me.
Cateen, thank you so much for showing us and giving us your genuine Essence. You are a great Spirit full of Genius and Musicality.

This performance brings me back to the world of classical music. Canteen a.k.a. Hayato Sumino you really played every note with the true heart! That's such a beautiful and delightful performance!

I'm sad he didn't get to the finals...
Hopefully he'll record the concerto, so we can listen!

Although he has not been able to move to the final round, I believe he has proved his potential to the world and start his performing career. I wish you play in my city very soon and I will call my friends to support you!

He played so much better in 3rd round and the atmosphere is much more relaxed. I wonder if it's because he plays better during the evening? Can't imagine myself waking up to perform Scherzo 1 or Ballade 2 at 10am.

My sister and I have been following the performances in this year's Chopin Piano Competition. Some critics have dismissed Hayato Sumino as just another YouTuber and that is a big understatement. Yes, he has a YouTube channel but many concert pianists do too (who hasn't?). Thing is, this guy is so well-rounded; he's a modern-day Renaissance man. His degree from Tokyo University is not even in music but in computer engineering. He has done research on digital music at IRCAM in France and also plays jazz. The fact that he has made it into the 3rd round of this Chopin Piano Competition is quite impressive. Where on earth did he find the time to practice and prepare for this major competition??!! I finished listening to his performance just now and I was BLOWN AWAY, especially by his interpretation of the last 3 pieces he played -- the Polonaise-Fantasie in A-flat, Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor (this took my breath away, no kidding!), and the Scherzo in C# minor. By the end of his performance, I was misty-eyed.

Reaching and playing in the 3rd round of the Chopin Piano Competition is really no mean feat compared to other piano competitions, in my opinion. For one, only Chopin's piano works are performed by the contestants in this competition, unlike in others wherein they could play pieces by composers from the various art music periods (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Modern). That means many of the same works are being performed and listened to over and over again during the competition. A contestant 's interpretation, therefore, really has to stand out in a positive way in order to be noticed by the judges and be chosen to go to the next round. Then there's also the fact that all of Chopin's piano works are some of the most difficult in all of the piano repertoire, both technically and musically. Each one epitomizes the gold standard in pianistic expression. How does one express the uniqueness of each piece while maintaining the cohesiveness of the composer's style? There lies the real challenge and difficulty in this particular piano competition. In my opinion, Sumino has more than achieved this during this 3rd round.

Congratulations for having reached Stage III of the Chopin Competition. One in 23 out of over 500 who postulated is a victory in itself. Your Stage I performance on October 4 has reached over 1,000,000 views in 10 days. That is a first in this competition. It is a testimony of the love you radiate and the inspiration you are for young pianists all over the World

Sumino's artistry knows no bound. I believe as a well instructed pianist, he approaches any piece with an understanding of the composer's background and intentions of the markings in the piece. He internalizes that and tries to bring that out when he plays and which in principle can really bring out the best of every piano piece ever written. That is in in the realm of interpretation. Technically, he is a true prodigy and master of every technical passage you can possibly get him to play. Both are incredible to see in a single pianist. It would not be surprising if he does not medal or conversely even win the competition!
