How to write kanji Shichi (七)

Today's kanji is shichi(七). This kanji is called both shichi(七) and nana(七). So, let's start by talking a little more about the word.

Shichi(七) is a lucky number in Japan.

There is a popular god called shichifukujin(七福神) in Japan.　Shichi(七) is the first kanji in the god’s name. The meaning is the Seven Lucky Gods. And may also be known as the Seven Gods of Happiness or the Seven Gods of Good Fortune.

The other kanji using shichi(七) are shichigosan(七五三) and tanabata(七夕). Shichi(七) is used as the first kanji in these phrases. Shichigosan(七五三) and tanabata(七夕) is a popular event in Japan.

So, let’s get started! This kanji is drawn using 2 lines.

Before I draw these kanji, I will first prepare a kanji box. Imagine that your kanji are inside an invisible square box. This box will stop you drawing your kanji too big or too small.

First, line 1 is a long horizontal line. Draw it from left to right in the center of the kanji ‘box’.
Finally, line 2 is like a large L. (meaning: similar to an L shape) Draw a long vertical line from top to bottom, when you get to the bottom, curve the line, and draw a horizontal line to the right.

Shichi(七) is complete!

To tell the truth, kanji has a lot of important writing rules. Japanese people are taught it at school when they are children. But, most Japanese people forget it when they grow up. For example, when we draw neatly, we need to use Tome and Hane. But Japanese people don’t use Tome and Hane very much in their daily lives. So, it's okay if you don’t use Tome and Hane. When you become more comfortable writing kanji, you should start following this rule.
