Hello. Today, I am at Rakusui-en in Fukuoka. A self-proclaimed Japanese garden girl, I will do my best to introduce the highlights of this garden as an amateur reporter.

こんにちは。今日は、福岡県の楽水園に来ました。日本庭園好きの自称庭女子の私が、素人なりにここのお庭の鑑賞ポイントをお話させて頂きます。

Rakusui-en was a resort villa built by the wealthy merchant Zen-emon Shimozawa during the Meiji period (1868-1912). Now it is managed by Fukuoka City. It’s about a 10 minute walk from the JR Hakata Station.

楽水園は、明治時代に豪商・下澤善右衛門親正が造った別荘でした。今は、福岡市が管理する日本庭園となっています。JR博多駅から徒歩10分程の距離にあります。

If you walk on the walkway paved with delicately cut stones and pass through the garden’s gate, the hustle and bustle of the Hakata city life gradually fades away.

切石を丁寧に敷き詰めた敷石の上を歩き、門をくぐると、都会の喧騒が嘘のように消えていきます。

This garden, surrounded by a unique Hakata fence that catches everyone's attention, comprises a tea garden and a strolling garden with a pond.

皆さんの目を引く、一風変わった博多塀に囲まれたこの日本庭園は、小規模ながら茶庭と池泉回遊式を備えた庭園となっています。

This fence was the first part of the Hakata city to be reconstructed after it burned down in the Warring States period (from the end of 15 century to the end of 16 century). It was made using burnt stones and roof tiles from the wreckage, the first construction project of its type.

博多塀は、戦国時代に焼け野原となった博多の町を復興させる際に、焼け石や焼け瓦などの瓦礫を土塀に用いて造られたのが初めてでした。

There is an upright stone washbasin beside the garden reception, giving the whole villa a noble atmosphere.

受付の脇には、立ち手水鉢があり、全体的に高貴な造りとなっています。

If you look at the bamboo pillar on the right-hand side, you can see unique pillars with shaving marks, which are a traditional effect in Japanese architecture/design.

また、右側の竹垣の柱をよく見ると、削り跡を残した独特の柱となっていて、これは伝統的な日本建築の加工の意匠です。

This fence is made by collecting bamboo branches, and is called “takeho-gaki. “

この竹垣は、竹穂、つまり竹の枝を集めて作ったもので、竹穂垣と言います。

There is Sui-kin-kutsu (“Water-koto basin”) here. A Sui-kin-kutsu has a mechanism to play a tone like the sound of the Japanese harp, called “the Koto”, when water is poured into the basin. There is an Oribe toro (Oribe lantern) near Sui-kin-kutsu. The lantern has a round-shaped stone on its head, and is suspended on a round-shaped pole.

ここには水琴窟もあります。水琴窟は、水が落ちると琴の音のような音が鳴る仕組みになっているものです。水琴窟の近くには、織部灯籠があります。宝珠や竿が丸いのが特徴の灯籠です。

This is the garden of the tea room called “roji.”

こちらが露地、つまり茶室の庭になります。

This is an outdoor waiting room with benches. It's a place to wait until the tea ceremony is ready. The stepping-stones at your feet are also fashionably designed.

こちらは、外腰掛け待合です。茶事の準備ができるまでの間、待つ場所です。足元の飛石にもおしゃれな意匠が施されています。

This building is a reproduction of the tea room built by Zen-emon Shimozawa, and is called "Rakusui-an." Inside the building are a fully-fledged tea room and three Japanese-style rooms: a Hagi room, an Iris room, and a Camellia room.

こちらの建物は、下澤善右衛門親正が建てた茶室を再現したもので、楽水庵と呼ばれます。この中には、本格的な茶室と萩の間、菖蒲の間、椿の間の３つの和室があります。

When you exit the tea house garden, you will find the strolling garden with pond next to it.

茶庭を出ると、隣には池泉回遊式庭園があります。

Because there are tall trees here, the ground is shaded and feels cool. The fresh green leaves are beautiful.

高い木のお陰で地上は日陰となり、涼し気に感じます。新緑がきれいですね。

You can see the carp swimming!

Today, I’ve told you about the Japanese garden at Rakusui-en. This spot has been used for pre-wedding shoots and is really popular for taking pictures--we even saw a group taking pictures today! It's also a wonderful healing spot, which is hard to imagine being so near to the busy JR Hakata Station. I want you to enjoy traditional Japanese designs, so I recommend that you visit the garden here!
