The content of chapter 5 is the story of do-over English colonies.

The first British colonies in Roanoke Island failed, so the British sought new settlements, and founded them on the banks of the James River in North America. Because James became King of England after Queen Elizabeth I died in 1603, it was named Jamestown in the King's honor.

Jamestown was bitterly cold in winter, and humid in summer. Also, there were many mosquitoes, so diseases like malaria infested Jamestown. Because most settlers were rich adventurers or explorers, they didn't like work such as growing food and building houses. For that reason, about 340 settlers died. The local Native American Powhatan people worried about them and gave them food and water.

After that, cultivating tobacco for export at Jamestown was successful. The tobacco was hugely profitable as a cash crop, so the Virginia Company also was established. The tobacco farms appeared all over the land along the James River.

Increasingly, the Powhatan people worried about their action, and launched a military campaign on March 22, 1622. The vicious fighting continued for 20 years, and the English population decreased a quarter from the fighting.

In 1624, King James revoked various rights in Jamestown, and he changed the management of the colonies to royal governance. However, after King James I's death, it was restored to be managed by settlers, though…

After that time, In 1676, the rebellion of Nathaniel Bacon’s group happened. He was angry about land, high taxes, and the colony not listening to the settlers. However, it was finished by his untimely death from dysentery.
