Kongoubu-ji Temple 金剛峯寺

Hello. Today, I am at Kongoubu-ji Temple in Mt. Koya, Wakayama. The temple here features Japan’s largest dry landscape garden, Banryu-tei. A self-proclaimed Japanese garden girl, I will do my best to introduce the highlights of this garden as an amateur reporter.

こんにちは。今日は、和歌山県高野山にある金剛峯寺に来ました。ここには、日本最大の枯山水・蟠龍庭があります。日本庭園好きの自称庭女子の私が、素人なりにこの庭の鑑賞ポイントをお話させて頂きます。

First, as you walk through the corridor, the white sand and scattered rocks give you your first taste of what is to come in the main garden at Banryu-tei. The roof of the courtyard is made of cypress bark called Hiwada-buki. In fact, the roofs throughout the whole temple are created out of this cypress bark. Hiwada-buki is commonly found in old historic buildings, for example Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto and Itsukushima Shrine in Hiroshima.

まず、お寺の中に入って中を進むと、廊下から蟠龍庭の序章が始まります。この坪庭の塀の屋根は檜皮葺と言って、檜の樹皮を貼った屋根になっています。お寺全体がこの檜皮葺の屋根となっていて、この屋根は古い歴史的な建物でよく見られる屋根です。有名なところで言うと、京都の清水寺や広島の厳島神社が同じ屋根となっています。

The actual Banryu-tei garden starts from here. The bright white of the sand makes the green hues of the trees shine, and it looks very tasteful. The garden site is 2,340 square meters, about half the size of a football field.

ここからが蟠龍庭の本番です。白砂に緑の木々の色がよく映えていて、とても風情があります。この枯山水の大きさは2340平方メートル。東京ドーム半分の大きさです。

The area around Mount Koya forms a long basin from east to west. The basin’s shape has been described as looking like a dragon lying down when viewed from east to west, and like a crouching tiger when viewed from north to south. The name of the garden, Banryu (lit. “coiled dragon”), portrays a dragon remaining on the ground without rising to the sky. The design for the dry landscape garden was created using these two fanciful descriptions as motifs. The white sand represents the sea of clouds, and the stone arrangement represents two dragons. Thus, the whole garden symbolically represents the two dragons guarding a palace for the nobility called "Okuden".

高野山は東西に長い盆地で、「東西に龍が伏せており、南北に虎がうずくまっている」と形容されてきた土地柄です。また、蟠龍庭の蟠龍とは、天に昇らずに地上にとぐろを巻いて留まっている龍のことを表した言葉で、この２つの言葉をキーワードにこの枯山水は造られています。白砂で雲の海を表し、石組で龍を表しています。2匹の龍が貴賓室である奥殿を守っているという設定です。

It is said that the stone is granite, which is durable and does not deteriorate easily. It is also said that dragon scales are very hard, so I think that such a timeproof material like granite is the perfect choice for representing the dragon’s tough scales.

石は花崗岩を使っているそうです。龍のうろこはとても硬度が高いと言われているので、耐久性があり劣化しにくい花崗岩を使って、龍の鱗を表現しているのかもしれませんね。

Additionally, It is said that the white sand used in the dry-landscape garden is the hard-to-find Shirakawa sand from Kyoto. Currently, in gardening it is common to use white sand from China with various others mixed in. Thus, I think that the garden is unique for using this pure white sand from Kyoto.

そして、敷かれている白砂は、京都産の白川砂だそうです。現在では白砂は中国産の白砂を主体にいろいろ混ぜて白川砂に似せたものを使うのが一般的だそうなので、純粋な京都産の白砂を使っているというだけでも、すごいお庭だと言えます。

The architect of this garden has not been officially announced. Actually, there are some gardens made by famous garden designer Mirei Shigemori in Mount Koya, so I would like to say that the garden architect is Mirei Shigemori, but suspect it is probably a different designer because the stone arrangement style does not match Shigemori’s taste. I personally think that it is a pity that the public cannot know the name of whoever designed the lovely garden here.

このお庭の作庭家は公式に発表されておらず、謎となっています。高野山では重森三玲の庭が点在しているので、重森三玲だと言いたいところですが、石の据え方が重森先生のお庭っぽくないので、違うと私は思います。本当に、このお庭をデザインされた方が名前が出ないのはもったいない気がしますね。
