How to write kanji Ame (雨)

Today’s kanji is “Ame(雨)”. So, let’s start by explaining a little more about the word.

"Ame(雨)" means raining in English. It’s a popular kanji in Japan
“Ame(雨)” is a kanji that can be used on it’s own, but we also use it as a part of the common word “Bush(部首)”. For example, "Inazuma(電)" means lightning, "Kaminari(雷)" means thunder, "Shizuku(雫)" means a drop, "Yuki(雪)" means snow, "Shimo(霜)" is frost and "Kumo(雲)" is a cloud. Each of these words includes the "Ame(雨)" kanji. They all describe the weather.

Let’s move on to writing the kanji for “Ame(雨)”.

Before I draw these kanji, I will first prepare a kanji box. Imagine that your kanji are inside an invisible square box. This box will stop you drawing your kanji too big or too small.

First, we draw a horizontal line. In kanji this is called "ichi(一)”.
Next on the left side under the horizontal line, we draw a short vertical line. From the top of the short vertical line, draw half of a square. From the middle of the horizontal line, draw a vertical line in the middle. This is like we are dividing the square.
Finally, we draw two really short diagonal lines between the left hand vertical line and the middle vertical line. The diagonal line goes down from left to right. Repeat the diagonal lines for the space between the middle vertical line and the right hand vertical line.
