How to write kanji Me (目)

Today, before I explain the kanji, I want to introduce these notebooks. Here are two notebooks.

They’re called がくしゅうちょう(ga ku syu-cho) in Japan. I bought two notebooks that Japanese children actually use for studying kanji in a stationery store. A lot of big squares are printed on the pages of these notebooks. Japanese children use these notebooks, to practice kanji, hiragana and katakana. So, I recommend using squared paper like this for practicing kanji.

They have a cute illustration of Pikachu on the front page. In Japan, がくしゅうちょう(gakusyu-cho) commonly has a printed cover that shows a picture of an anime, insects or flowers.

Then, let's start by explaining how to write me(目), that is today’s kanji.

Me(目) means eye. Me(目) also call moku(目). Me(目) has five lines.

First, line 1 is a vertical line. Draw it on the left of the kanji box.
Line 2 is a half-square line. Draw from the top of line 1 to around the top right hand corner, and then continue drawing vertically to around the bottom right hand corner of the kanji box.
Line 3 is a horizontal line. Draw it one third down from the top.
Line 4 is also a horizontal line. Draw it one third down from line 3.
Finally, line 5 is a horizontal line. We complete the box by drawing from the end of line 1 to the end of line 2.

Me(目) is complete!

If you draw a little squashed me(目) kanji and add two lines, it will become kai(貝). Kai(貝) means a shell. Kai(貝) has 7 lines.

First, we draw a little squashed me(目) kanji.
Next, line 6 is a short curving diagonal line. We draｗ it under the bottom left side of me(目). Draw this line from right to left.
Finally, line 7 is a short straight diagonal line. We draw it under the bottom right of me(目). Draw this line from left to right.

Kai(貝) is complete!

If you draw a little squashed me(目) kanji and add two lines, it will become mi(見). Mi(見) is also called ken(見), but it’s not commonly used. This kanji is written commonly as miru(見る) by adding hiragana ru(る). Miru(見る) means to see, to look and to watch. Miru(見る) has 7 lines.

First, we draw a squashed me(目) kanji in the top half of the kanji box.
Next, line 6 is a long curving diagonal line. We draw it under the bottom left side of me(目). Draw this line from right to left.
Finally, line 7 is a hooked shaped line. We draw it under the bottom right side of me(目). Draw this line from left to right.

Miru(見る) is complete!

Today, we practiced how to draw three kanji. There are other upper level kanji that use me(目); they are mayu(眉), ken(県), sou(相) and so on.
