今回はこの続きを見ていきます。「on」＋名詞の熟語を見ていきましょう。

１ on one's back

ex. I usually sleep on my back.
「私は普段仰向けで寝ている」

on one's back「仰向けに」/ backは「背中」という意味。

２ on one's stomach/ face

ex.I lay on my stomach on the beach.
「私はビーチでうつ伏せになった」

on one's stomach / face「うつ伏せに」/ on one's backの逆です。stomachは「お腹」という意味。

３ on display

ex. The work was on display.
「作品は展示されている」

on display「展示して」/ displayは「陳列、展示」という意味。他にも、「on exhibit / on exhibition / on show」も覚えておこう。

４ on TV

ex. Are there any good programs on TV?
「テレビで良い番組はありますか？」

on TV「テレビで」/ 中学でも習う熟語。

５ on all fours

ex. The baby was crawling about on all fours.
「赤ちゃんは四つん這いでハイハイしていた」

on all fours「４つ足をついて」/ 「on」が「接触」、「fours」で「４つ」と考えるとまんまな意味。

６ on the top of

ex. The lake stands on the top of the hill.
「湖は丘の上にある」

on the top of「～の上に」 / ～の「top」の「上に」と考える。
