セッション定番曲その160：Goodbye Pork Pie Hat by Charles Mingus / Joni Mitchell / Jeff Beck
ジャズ／フュージョン系セッションの定番曲。ベーシストCharles MingusがLester Youngに捧げる曲として作ったバラードです。みんなが頻繁に練習する曲でもないですが、（譜面持ち込みで）いきなりリクエストしても怒られないギリギリの選曲かも。

和訳したものはあちこちのWebサイトに掲載されているので、ここではポイントだけ説明します。
ポイント1：Jeff Beck
ロック世代がこの曲を知ったのはJeff Beckの1976年発表のアルバム「Wired」収録のこのバージョンから。当時はハードロック好きもプログレ好きもみんなこのアルバムは聴いていました。Jeff Beckは基本的に曲作りをしない人（ギターリフまで）なので、こういうメロディアスな曲は何かの引用だと思っていたら、まさかのCharles Mingusでした。ピッキングハーモニックス多めのギターがカッコいい。そういえばJeff Beckは一時期「サックスのフレーズのコピーにはまって、そればかりやっている」と言っていました。
ポイント2：Charles Mingus
で、原曲はこれ。ベースというと「単音楽器」「テンポ／リズム・キープ」というイメージもありますが、こんなに複雑なハーモニーの曲をどうやって書いたのでしょう。実は優れたベーシストには鋭いハーモニー感覚を持っている人が多いですし、Charles Mingusはピアニストという顔も持っていて、オリジナル曲を沢山書いています。
ポイント3：Joni Mitchell
1979年ライブ録音。Joni Mitchell, Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius, Michael Brecker, Don Aliasとステージ上に天才しかいない奇跡のライブ。Lester Youngを偲ぶという趣旨に沿って、物語性のある歌詞を付けて歌っています。この時期のJoni Mitchellはフォーク／ポップスの世界から少し離れて多くのジャズミュージシャンを起用していました。
ポイント4：Lester Young
1959年に亡くなったテナーサックス奏者、ビバップ軍団よりも年上の、いわば古い世代のジャズプレイヤーです。ふくよかな音色と歌心のあるフレージングで聴かせるタイプで、実は一般の方が「ジャズサックス」としてイメージするのはこの人の演奏かもしれません。Billie Holidayとの共演も多かったです。
モダンジャズはある時期までずっと「進化」してきたという見方も強いので、その流行から外れてしまったものは聴かれにくかったのですが、今やそういう聴き方こそ時代遅れという感覚もあります。時代順を無視して、自分が聴いて「いい！」と思ったものを聴けばいいんじゃないかと。
ポイント5：Joni Mitchellの歌詞のポイントと曲の構成

Of refusing a black man admission

Underdog position, cellars and chitlins
バード（チャーリー・パーカー）も懐かしんで言ってたよ

平たい帽子を被って素敵なジャズをスイングさせてたよな
あの頃、黒人ミュージシャン達は色々と難癖付けられて

レスターは希望の星だったよ
二番でも人種差別の描写が続きます。Lester Youngの何番目かの奥さんは白人女性だったのでしょうか。このカップルは随分酷い目に遭ったようです。最後には「リンチされて木から吊るされるかもしれない」とも歌っています。
三番ではその後の希望が見えてきた状況が描かれています。NYの街（黒人街）では夜中なのに子供達は通りで踊り、タクシーは賑やかに警笛を鳴らし、人々は交流を始めています。
思い出話から始まり、実はかなり重い内容の歌詞でした。Charles Mingusが思い描いていた世界観を反映したのだと思いますが、この曲が「歌もの」としては定着しなかった原因はこの歌詞かもしれません。
12小節の変形マイナーブルースと解釈して演奏している人も多いようです。メロディの譜割りがどんどん変化していくのがキモです。
ポイント5：様々な歌唱
実は様々な歌詞を付けて歌われています。個人的にはRoland Kirk版の方がコンパクトにまとまっていて、メロディにのせやすいです。

ジャズ系よりもフュージョン系のミュージシャンによる演奏が目立ちます。
