Youtubeで吃音情報配信2回目(English)

Hi, everyone.
I’m Dr. Kikuchi.
I'm a medical doctor who stutters in Japan.
I conducted a lot of basic and clinical studies on stuttering.
I consulted more than 500 people who stutter from preschool children to adults.
I have published 13 Japanese books on stuttering
I will share stuttering information on this channel.

Let’s talk about today’s topic.
Is it necessary?
Some mothers blame themselves for their child’s stuttering.
For example, a 3 year-old-son has started to stutter suddenly.
The mother fears that she had caused the stuttering by doing something wrong.

Let’s see the fact 1.
This graph shows the age at onset of stuttering.
From 24 to 35 months, over half of stuttering onsets occurred.
By the age 4, 95% of onsets had occurred.
During the period from 2 to 4 years old, a new younger brother or sister may be born.
The older child may start to stutter.
It is a tough time for parents to raise children.
The mother tends to be blamed for lack of affection by others.
However, the only child tends to stutter the same period.
I explain parents that the child would start to stutter even if young child was not born.
I also advise that parents don’t blame the younger child.

Fact 2 is the 3 manners of the onset of stuttering.
Sudden is from 1 to 3 days to start stuttering.
Intermediate is from 1 to 2 weeks to start stuttering.
Gradual is from over 3 weeks.
Among these manners, stuttering most often starts suddenly.
The sudden start of stuttering is not a reason for parents to be blamed.

Fact 3 is a prospective study of stuttering to 4 years in 2013.
The study included one thousand six hundred and nineteen 4-year-old children in Australia.
They were recruited at 8 months.

The study found that maternal mental health at 2 years was not a risk factor of stuttering.

The study found that the children who stutter had higher verbal and non-verbal scores than their peers who don't stutter.

The authors discussed that Stuttering might be a “byproduct” of rapid language development.

I will tell you a mother’s story about Jack Welch.
He was a famous American business executive who stutter.

His mother protected his self-esteem by telling him he stuttered "because you're so smart.
No one's tongue could keep up with a brain like yours."
I think so, too.

Everybody who stutters and parents can have their self-esteem.

This is a summary of today's topic:
Stuttering usually occurs from 2 to 4 years old.
Stuttering most often starts suddenly.
Stuttering might be a “byproduct” of rapid language development.
Mothers don't need to blame themselves for their child’s stuttering
