Why you choose this internship?

My friends and I have been actively seeking overseas internship opportunities, hoping to experience different cultures abroad, and learn about work ethics that differ from those in our home country.

What did you do in your internship?

Changing the water in the coral petri dish daily. Using a CT scanner to image coral fossils and calculate their age. Collecting seawater samples. Helping the researcher prepare items.
The most memorable task for me was changing the water for the coral spawns. It was something I had never experienced before, and I also got to see what the corals looked like after metamorphosis. These are all precious memories for me.

What realizations did you have through the internship?

During this internship, I learned a lot about corals and gained an understanding of the severity of global warming through studying them. The final report revealed several areas where I need improvement, such as speaking more fluently, having a broader perspective in my thinking, and addressing missing data. Looking back, I feel quite fortunate to have participated in this internship; I truly learned a lot.

What did you do on your day off?

On our days off, we often went fishing and snorkeling. The underwater scenery was truly beautiful. On Saturdays, We joined shamisen lessons. While shamisen was quite challenging for me, it was an unforgettable experience. In late July, we attended the harvest festival, where everyone warmly welcomed us.

What left a lasting impression in KIKAI island?

It is a truly beautiful island with friendly and kind people. The scenery is stunning, especially the night sky. It was the first time in my life that I saw such a spectacular view. During my time on Kikai Island, I was also lucky enough to see shooting stars twice.

What is your future goals?

In the future, I want to become an engineer, but I hope not to focus on a single field. I would like to collaborate with researchers from various disciplines, using my expertise to address challenging problems in other fields, such as using computing technology to streamline complex manual processes.
