おろちの恋

このお話は、昔、私が子供のときに読んだ民話です。

昔昔の川のほとりに愛を誓うひと組のカップルがいた。

おとこの方は、たいそうな美青年で、横笛の名人であった。

おんなの方は、川の近くの村娘で、気立てがよく、可愛らしい一途な娘であった。

身分違いの恋なのか、青年は、必ず夜になる前に帰っていった。

村娘の方は、青年にずっと一緒にいてほしいと
頼み込んだ。

しかし、苦しそうに青年は、首を振るのだった。

諦めきれない、村娘は、ある日内緒で青年の着物のたもとに針と糸をつけて、青年がどこに帰るのか、つきとめようとした。

すると、その夜、苦しい苦しいという青年の声がした。

夜の闇もあり、声を頼りに必死に村娘は、青年の姿を探した。

ところが。

そこにいたのは、青年ではなく、おろちであった。

おろちには、村娘が着物のたもとにつけたはずの針と糸が刺さっていた。

村娘は、泣き、おろちの針を抜いてやった。

おろちは、村娘にもう二度と会うことはないと、いい、姿を見られたくなかったと悲しそうに告げ、静かに消えて行った。

おろちのふいた笛の音がいつまでも川に響いていた。

耳に残る笛の音だったそうだ。

This story is a folktale that I read when I was a child.Once upon a time, there was a couple by the riverside who pledged their love to each other. The man was a very handsome young man and a master of the flute. The woman was a village girl near the river, with a good nature and a lovely and faithful daughter. Perhaps it was a love between people of different social classes, but the young man always left before nightfall. The village girl begged the young man to stay with her all the time. However, the young man sadly shook his head.Unable to give up, the village girl secretly attached a needle and thread to the hem of the young man's kimono one day, in order to find out where he went.That night, she heard the young man's voice, full of pain. In the darkness of the night, relying on his voice, the village girl desperately searched for the young man's figure.However.The one there was not the young man, but a giant snake (orochi). The needle and thread that the village girl had attached to the hem of his kimono were stuck in the snake.The village girl cried and removed the needle from the snake. The snake told her that they would never meet again and didn't want to be seen, and sadly disappeared. The sound of the flute that the snake dropped echoed in the river for a long time.
