Japan’s Tourism Growth
This morning, I came across a news article stating that overseas visitors to Japan hit a record high for August.
今朝、海外から日本への訪問者が8月に過去最高を記録したというニュース記事を見かけました。
According to the article, the number of travelers from China is recovering.
その記事によると、中国からの旅行者数が回復しているとのことです。
The Japan National Tourism Organization estimates that Japan had more than 2.93 million foreign visitors last month, which is up 36 percent from a year earlier and marks the seventh consecutive monthly record.
日本政府観光局の推計では、先月、日本には293万人以上の外国人旅行者が訪れ、前年同月比で36%の増加となり、7ヶ月連続で記録を更新しています。
Around this time last year, I restarted my original sake tour for the first time in four years.
ちょうど1年前、この時期に私は4年ぶりにオリジナルの日本酒ツアーを再開しました。
Looking back on it, it's really impressive to see that our country has made such a swift comeback in terms of the number of travelers.
振り返ってみると、旅行者数において、日本がこれほど早く回復したのは本当に素晴らしいことだと思います。
Another surprising fact is that by country or region, China tops the list with more than 745,800 visitors, roughly double the figure from a year earlier.
さらに驚くべき事実は、国や地域別で中国がトップであり、74万5800人以上が訪れ、前年の約2倍になっていることです。
What surprised me about this is that Japan hadn’t accepted visitors from China for quite some time.
これについて驚いたことは、日本がしばらくの間、中国からの訪問者を受け入れていなかったという点です。
If I remember correctly, the government allowed entry from China much later compared to other countries.
私の記憶が正しければ、政府が中国からの入国を許可したのは他国よりもかなり遅かったはずです。
Despite this delay, visitors from China have topped the list, which is pretty remarkable.
この遅れにもかかわらず、中国からの訪問者がトップになったのは非常に驚くべきことです。
China is followed by South Korea with 612,100 visitors and Taiwan with 564,300.
中国に続いて、韓国が61万2100人、台湾が56万4300人です。
The number of visitors from the United States reached 174,000, up 25.8 percent year-on-year, which is great news for someone like me who enjoys using English in my work.
アメリカからの訪問者数は17万4000人に達し、前年同月比で25.8%増加しました。これは、英語を使う仕事をしている私にとっては嬉しいニュースです。
The tourism organization also mentioned that if this trend continues, the number of visitors in 2024 will surpass the pre-pandemic peak.
観光局は、この傾向が続けば、2024年の訪問者数はパンデミック前のピークを超えるだろうとも述べています。
With this positive momentum, I hope I will have more opportunities to meet new people from different countries, whether through my sake services or English exchange events.
このような好調な流れの中で、私の酒ツアーや英語交流イベントを通じて、さまざまな国からの新しい人々に会う機会が増えることを期待しています。
However, despite this positive trend, there is a downside as well.
しかし、このような好調な流れにもかかわらず、悪い面もあります。
We live in a country that experiences numerous natural disasters throughout the year.
私たちは、年間を通じて多くの自然災害が発生する国に住んでいます。
Just like earthquakes, many of these disasters are unpredictable.
地震と同様に、多くの災害は予測できません。
However, one seasonal event we can expect is typhoons.
しかし、季節的なものとして予測できるのが台風です。
At this time of year, Japan experiences several typhoons, some of which can cause severe damage in certain areas.
この時期、日本は複数の台風に見舞われ、そのうちのいくつかは特定の地域に深刻な被害をもたらします。
Last month, we already had a few major typhoons that impacted many regions and industries.
先月、すでにいくつかの大きな台風が発生し、多くの地域や産業に影響を与えました。
I believe the tourism industry is one of the hardest-hit sectors due to these disasters.
観光業は、これらの災害によって最も大きな打撃を受ける業界の一つだと思います。
In fact, since March, the total number of visitors has exceeded 3 million every month, but the figure dipped in August, partly due to the impact of typhoons.
実際、3月以降、訪問者数は毎月300万人を超えていましたが、8月は台風の影響もあり、その数が減少しました。
Following the increase in July, demand was subdued because of the adverse weather brought by the storms.
7月の増加に続き、台風による悪天候の影響で需要が抑えられました。
I also experienced something disappointing.
私自身も残念な経験をしました。
My sake tour was canceled because my guests couldn’t travel to Himeji—no airplanes or bullet trains were available a few days after the typhoon that hit at the end of August.
私の日本酒酒ツアーはキャンセルされました。8月末に台風が直撃した数日後、飛行機も新幹線も利用できず、ゲストが姫路に来られなかったからです。
As the extreme heat decreases day by day this month and one of the most beautiful seasons begins, the number of travelers will likely rise again.
今月は日ごとに猛暑が和らぎ、最も美しい季節の一つが始まるので、旅行者数は再び増加すると思います。
I just hope that we can all enjoy this beautiful season to the fullest, without encountering any major issues.
この美しい季節を最大限楽しみ、何も大きな問題が起きないことを願っています。
