Himeji Reading & Chat Meetup
It’s been about a month since I created a language community called Himeji English Exchange, with the goal of creating a space where both Japanese and international people can interact in Himeji.
姫路で日本人と外国人が交流できる場を作ることを目指して、「姫路イングリッシュエクスチェンジ」という言語コミュニティを立ち上げて約1か月が経ちました。
So far, I’ve gathered 17 members and organized four different types of English-related events using a platform called Meetup.
現在までに、17人のメンバーを集め、Meetupというプラットフォームを使って4種類の英語関連イベントを開催しています。
These range from casual meetups to free trial lessons and English learning seminars.
これらはカジュアルなミートアップから、無料体験レッスンや英語学習セミナーまで幅広く行っています。
This was something I had anticipated before launching the community, but I’ve been struggling to attract participants to my events.
コミュニティを立ち上げる前から予想していたことですが、イベントに参加者を集めるのに苦労しています。
Recently, I came up with a new event idea.
最近、新しいイベントのアイデアを思いつきました。
I’m not sure where the idea came from, but I thought it might be fun to prepare a light, English-related task for everyone to work on together.
どこからこのアイデアが浮かんだのかは分かりませんが、みんなで取り組める軽めの英語に関連した課題を用意したら面白いかもしれないと思いました。
Each week, I make it a point to create original reading materials for my students who receive personalized learning support from me.
毎週、私の個別学習サポートを受けてくださっている生徒さんに、オリジナルのリーディング教材を作成しています。
I thought it would be great to take advantage of this and start a mini lesson where participants can work through reading materials, such as news articles, excerpts from books and things like that.
このアイデアを活かして、ニュース記事や本の抜粋などのリーディング教材を使って参加者の方が取り組めるミニレッスンを始めると良いかな思いました。
After reading through the material of the day, I’ll ensure there’s time for participants to discuss the topic.
その日の教材を読み終えた後は、そのトピックについて話す時間を確保します。
I’m also thinking of preparing some discussion questions related to the topic to make the session more interactive.
セッションをよりインタラクティブにするために、トピックに関連したディスカッション用の質問も用意しようと考えています。
The other day, I held a meetup event where participants casually interacted with each other in English.
先日、参加者が英語で気軽に交流するミートアップイベントを開催しました。
While free-flowing conversation is enjoyable, it can sometimes be boring or challenging, especially if participants are at a beginner level.
自由な会話は楽しいものの、時には退屈したり、難しく感じたりすることがあります、特に参加者の方のが初心者レベルの場合は。
By preparing a topic and some tasks based on it, I figured there would always be something for everyone to learn, and it could serve as a good reason to attract people interested in improving their English.
トピックとそれに基づく課題を用意することで、誰でも学べる何かが常にあり、英語を上達させたい人々を引きつける良い理由になるだろうと考えました。
That night, I knew I would have two participants who had attended my events several times before.
その日の夜は、以前に何度か私のイベントに参加したことのある2名の参加者の方が来てくださることは分かっていました。
Considering their personalities and motivations to learn English, I was confident they would enjoy this new approach and feel happy to try something different, so I thought it was a perfect time to test out the idea.
その方たちの性格や英語学習へのモチベーションを考慮すると、この新しいアプローチを楽しんで、何か新しいことを試すことに喜んでくださるだろうと確信していたので、このアイデアを試すには絶好の機会だと思いました。
Without telling them in advance, I prepared a reading material with ten questions from NHK World.
事前に告知せず、NHKワールドの読み物と10個の質問を用意しました。
I printed it out and brought it to the café where I always hold the event.
それを印刷して、いつもイベントを開催しているカフェに持って行きました。
When I handed it to the participants, they seemed surprised, and I was a bit concerned it might be too challenging for them.
その方たちにそれを渡したとき、彼らは驚いた様子で、少し難しすぎたかな？と、少し心配になりました。
However, they appeared to enjoy working through it.
しかし、彼らはそれを楽しんで取り組んでいるように見えました。
Once they grasped the overall content of the article and answered all the questions, I guided them through some interesting words and phrases, helping them dive deeper into the details.
記事の全体的な内容を理解し、すべての質問に答えた後、私は興味深い単語やフレーズを説明し、詳細に深く入っていけるように導きました。
I also touched on some related or extended knowledge, which they found very helpful.
また、関連する知識や補足的な内容にも触れ、彼らはそれを非常に役立つと感じてくださいました
The topic was about an upcoming change in the admission fees for Himeji Castle in a few years.
トピックは、数年後に姫路城の入場料が変更されるという内容でした。
We shared opinions on whether raising the fees for non-Himeji residents was fair, and we also discussed whether this change might affect the number of visitors to Himeji.
姫路市民以外の入場料を引き上げることが公平かどうかについて意見を交換し、この変更が姫路への観光客数に影響を与えるかどうかも話し合いました。
While doing all this, I realized that this structured format could really work and might attract more participants.
これを行っている間、この構造化された形式がうまく機能し、さらに多くの参加者を引き付けることができるかもしれないと感じました。
In addition to the four events I currently hold, I’ve decided to try starting it out officially from next week.
現在行っている4つのイベントに加えて、正式に来週からスタートしてみることにしました。
I've named it "Himeji Reading & Chat Meetup" and created a page on Meetup.
「Himeji Reading & Chat Meetup」と言うタイトルにして、Meetup にページを作りました。
As the subtitle goes, I hope to make it a place where participants connect with each other, learn something, and most importantly have a good time.
サブタイトルにあるように、参加者の方どうしがつながれて、何か学ぶものがあり、そして何よりも楽しんでいただけるような場所にしたいと思っています。

The discussion about climate change lasted for over two hours.
気候変動に関する議論は2時間以上続きました。
❺extend：拡張する、延長する
The company decided to extend the deadline for the project by two weeks.
会社はプロジェクトの締め切りを2週間延長することを決定しました。
