Two 500-yen Coins
Today, something I hadn’t wanted to happen did happen.
今日は、起こってほしくなかったことが起こってしまいました。
While driving my motorcycle to Himeji Station, it suddenly stopped.
姫路駅へバイクを運転している途中、突然バイクが止まってしまいました。
At first, I thought the engine just hadn’t warmed up well enough.
最初は、エンジンが十分に温まっていないだけだと思いました。
I had always needed to kick the starter because the engine starter button didn’t work—probably because the battery was dead.
エンジンのスターターボタンが使えなかったので、いつもキックでエンジンをかけなければなりませんでした。おそらくバッテリーが切れていたのでしょう。
After kicking the starter about a hundred times, I began to think, "This is terrible... It broke down. Why does this have to happen here?"
スターターを約100回蹴った後、私は「最悪だ... 壊れてしまった。なんでここでこんなことが起こるんだ？」と思い始めました。
I couldn’t dwell on it, so I tried to shift my mindset and decided to call a mechanic to pick up the motorcycle.
いつまでも悩んでいられないので、気持ちを切り替えて、バイクを引き取りに来てもらうために修理工を呼ぶことにしました。
Luckily, I was close to a big supermarket, so I went there and asked the manager if I could park the bike until the mechanic arrived.
幸運にも、大きなスーパーの近くだったので、そこに行き、修理工が到着するまでバイクを置かせてもらえるかマネージャーに尋ねました。
The manager was kind enough to let me do that, so I called the mechanic and explained what had happened.
マネージャーは快く許可してくれたので、修理工に電話をかけ、状況を説明しました。
He said he would come to the parking lot later that day, which relieved me, and I headed to the nearest bus stop to catch a bus.
彼はその日のうちに駐車場に来ると言ってくれたので、安心して最寄りのバス停に向かい、バスに乗ることにしました。
It arrived a few minutes after I got there, so I thought it wouldn’t take longer than expected, and my schedule wouldn’t be completely ruined.
バス停に到着してから数分でバスが来たので、予定より遅くなることはなく、スケジュールが完全に崩れることもないと思いました。
As I was getting off the bus, I noticed I had only two 500-yen coins, one 100-yen coin, and three 10-yen coins.
バスを降りるときに、500円玉が2枚、100円玉が1枚、10円玉が3枚しかないことに気づきました。
The bus fare was 230 yen, so I thought it would be fine.
バス料金は230円だったので大丈夫だと思いました。
However, the money exchanger couldn’t accept new coins minted in the Reiwa era.
しかし、両替機が令和時代に鋳造された新しい硬貨を受け付けなかったのです。
I could pay 130 yen with the 100-yen coin and the three 10-yen coins, but both of my 500-yen coins were made in Reiwa 6, so there wasn’t much else I could do.
100円玉と3枚の10円玉で130円は払えましたが、500円玉はどちらも令和6年のもので、他にできることはありませんでした。
Seeing the situation, I was about to ask if I could run to the nearest convenience store to break the new 500-yen coin, which I thought would be the best solution for both of us.
その状況を見て、近くのコンビニに走って500円玉を崩してもいいか聞こうとしました。それが双方にとって最善の解決策だと思ったのです。
But before I could say anything, the bus driver understood the situation and said,
しかし、私が何か言う前に、バスの運転手は状況を理解して言いました。
“This time, you can get away with paying 130 yen. Next time you take the bus, just make sure to pay the extra 100 yen.”
「今回は130円でいいですよ。次にバスに乗るときに、追加の100円を払ってくださいね。」
I felt thankful to the driver for his flexibility, trust, generosity, and most importantly, his kindness.
運転手さんの柔軟性、信頼してくださったこと、寛大さ、そして何よりその優しさに感謝しました。
After getting off the bus, I wondered when I’d get the chance to pay the money.
バスを降りた後、いつお返しできるのだろうと考えました。
Then I realized I would need to take a bus back to my mom's house that night, giving me the perfect opportunity to fulfill my promise.
そしてその夜、母の家に帰るために再びバスに乗らなければならないことに気づき、約束を果たす絶好の機会だと思いました。
If my motorcycle hadn’t broken down, I wouldn’t have had to take the bus, so it was a mishap that led to me paying the fare in cash.
もしバイクが壊れていなければ、バスに乗る必要はなかったでしょう。だから、現金で運賃を払うことになったのはちょっとした不運でした。
I usually load my commuting pass, called “Pitapa,” with money when I take public transportation like buses or trains.
私は普段、バスや電車などの公共交通機関を利用する際、「ピタパ」という通勤パスにお金をチャージしています。
There’s no discount or points benefit with it, but it’s simple and convenient.
割引やポイントはありませんが、シンプルで便利です。
When I got on the bus back to my mom's house, I tapped my card on the reader.
母の家に戻るバスに乗ったとき、カードリーダーにピタパをタッチしました。
The bus was crowded, and there wasn’t much space around me, so I held onto my card and took out the 100-yen coin I had promised to pay earlier.
バスは混んでいて、周りにあまりスペースがなかったので、ピタパを手に持ちながら、先ほど支払うと約束した100円玉を取り出しました。
About twenty minutes later, the bus arrived at my stop.
約20分後、バスは私の停留所に到着しました。
Since it was the last stop, I had a chance to speak with the driver.
最後の停留所だったので、運転手と話すチャンスがありました。
It would have been perfect if it had been the same driver from earlier—a moment straight out of a movie—but reality doesn’t always work like that.
もし最初の運転手さんと同じだったら完璧だったでしょう。そしたら、それは映画のような瞬間になったでしょう。でも現実はそううまくいかないものです。
This time, it was a female driver, and I figured I’d need to explain why I was paying with both the card and cash.
今回は女性の運転手で、カードと現金の両方で支払う理由を説明しなければならないと思いました。
She seemed a bit surprised at first, but after I briefly explained what had happened and why I was doing this, she responded, “Thank you very much. I appreciate your politeness and honesty.”
最初は少し驚いているように見えましたが、私が簡単に経緯を説明すると、「そうでしたか。それはご丁寧にありがとうございます。」と言ってくださいました。
It was a bit of a strange day, with problems happening one after another, but I think I handled both situations well without getting upset or panicking.
問題が次々と起こる、ちょっと変な日でしたが、どちらの状況も冷静に対処できたと思います。
