お茶漬け

Yesterday I joined a lunch gathering at a simple yet stylish looking place called "Kitchen cafe & bar makomi" in Akashi.
（昨日、私は明石にある「Kitchen cafe & bar makomi」というシンプルでスタイリッシュな場所でランチ会に参加しました）
Besides me, there were two other participants and the host.
（私以外にも、参加者の方が2人と主催の方がいました）
They offered three different lunch sets to choose from.
（選べるランチセットは3種類ありました）
All of them looked very delicious, so I needed to think about which to eat for a while.
（どれもとても美味しそうだったので、しばらく考える必要がありました）
After giving it some thoughts, I decided to go for "ochazuke" lunch set.
（考えた末、私はお茶漬けのランチセットにすることにしました）
By the way, how do you explain "ochazuke" to people from overseas?
（ところで、海外の人々に「お茶漬け」を説明するとしたらどうしますか？）
If my future guest for the sake tour asks me,
（もしこの先日本酒ツアーに参加してくれるゲストの方にこのように聞かれたら）
"Hey Kazu, what is ochazuke?"
（かづさん、お茶漬けって何ですか？）
I think I'd probably say like,
（おそらくこのように答えるだろうと思います）
Ochazuke is a word that comes from two Japanese words, "ocha" -tea- and "tsukeru" -soak-.
（お茶漬けは日本語の「お茶」と「漬ける」という2つの単語から成り立っています）
So, if you simply put the two words together, the word should be pronounced "ochatukeru", but actually it's not pronounced that way.
（なので、その2語をくっつけたら「お茶つける」と発音されるべきです。しかし、実際はそうではありません）
This is one of the trickiest things that makes learning Japanese challenging for non-Japanese speakers, but Japanese words can change how they're pronounced by being combined with other words.
（これは日本語を非日本語話者が学ぶ際の難しい点の一つなのですが、日本語の単語は他の単語と組み合わせることで発音が変化することがあります）
By combining "ocha" and "tsukeru", tsu turns into zu.
（「お茶」と「つける」を組み合わせると、「つ」が「ず」に変化します）
And as for ru, the sound is omitted.
（「る」に関しては、音が省略されます）
This is how "ochatukeru" changes into "ochazuke".
（このように「お茶つける」が「お茶漬け」に変わります）
Because of the meanings of each word, ochazuke can be translated as tea-soaked rice.
（それぞれの語の意味から、「お茶漬け」は「お茶で浸されたご飯」と訳されることがあります）
It's totally understandable, but in my opinion, it's better to put it this way.
（それは理解できる説明ですが、私の意見では、こう表現した方が良いと思います）
"Ochazuke" is one of the traditional Japanese dishes. Hot tea, dasi, or hot water is poured over cooked rice topped with various ingredients.
（「お茶漬け」は日本の伝統的な料理の1つです。熱いお茶やだし、熱湯が炊いたご飯にかけられ、様々な具材がトッピングされます）
Direct translation works out well in most cases, but me personally, adding some extra information, giving some specific examples and using analogies would be more helpful for those who are not familiar with our culture.
（直訳は多くの場合機能しますが、個人的には、情報を加えたり、具体例を挙げたり、類似点を述べたりすることで、私たちの文化になじみがない人でも分かりやすくなるだろうと思います）
Let me get back to where we were.
（ここで元の話に戻りましょう）
A few minutes after we sat at the table, a server walked up to us to take orders.
（テーブルに座って数分後、店員さんが注文を取りに来ました）
As I ordered the set, the server told me that I could choose what I'd like my "ochazuke" topped with.
（お茶漬けセットを注文すると、店員さんがお茶漬けのトッピングを選べると教えてくれました）
There were four options, salted plum, spicy cod roe, Akashi sea bream and a combination of steamed chicken and dried kelp.
（選べるトッピングは、梅干し、辛子明太子、明石の鯛、鶏と昆布の組み合わせの4つでした）
Because I love eating, I can be indecisive at times in a situation like this where all the options look appealing.
（私は食べることが大好きなので、このような全ての選択肢が魅力的な場面ではたまに迷うことがあります）
However, I didn't need time to think that time.
（しかし、今回は迷うことなく決めました）
I decided to go for Akashi sea bream right away because the city is well known for fresh seafood and I thought I would regret not eating it there.
（明石は新鮮な海鮮が有名で、食べないと後悔するだろうと思たので、私はすぐに明石の鯛を選びました）
I'm glad I made the right choice.
（正しい選択をしたと思っています）
It was super tasty!
（とても美味しかったです！）
It was a lot of fun having delicious lunch and interacting with new people.
（美味しいランチを楽しみ、新しい人と交流できて楽しかったです）

❶host:主催者、ホスト
He was the host of the dinner party.
（彼はその夕食会の主催者でした）
❷set:セット、組み合わせ
They offer three different dinner sets.
（彼らは3種類のディナーセットを提供しています）
❸topped with: ...の上にトッピングされた
The pizza was topped with fresh basil.
（そのピザは新鮮なバジルでトッピングされていました）
❹regret:後悔する、残念に思う
I regret not going to the concert last night.
（昨夜、そのコンサートに行かなかったことを後悔しています）
❺indecisive:優柔不断な
She is very indecisive when it comes to making important decisions.
（重要な決定をする際、彼女は優柔不断です）
